Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Specifications

By Alborz Fallah |

In the words of Jeremy Clarkson, we’ve been inundated with one email asking us for more details on Toyota’s new Landcruiser 70 Series (actually thats not true – we’ve had countless requests). So far our answer has been, we know nothing since Toyota’s marketing department doesn’t seem to think anyone wants to buy the 70 series! However roughly 15 minutes ago, Toyota went crazy and released some 30 pages of information.

Firstly, we all knew that the new LandCruiser 70 series will come with Toyota’s first V8 turbo-diesel engine and the series’ first wagon variant. The updates to the new LandCruiser 70 Series also include structural and styling changes imposing a front end with a wider track, improved suspension and better steering feel.

All the new 70 series cars come with an engine immobiliser, CD player with MP3 compatibility and a new grille, headlamps, front fenders and front bumpers. All models are powered exclusively by the new 4.5-litre V8 turbo-diesel engine, featuring common-rail direct injection and an intercooler.

Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Specifications

The Turbo V8 (which is Euro IV-compliant), is a 32-valve and delivers 151kW of power at 3400rpm and torque of 430Nm is reached at just 1200rpm and held all the way to 3200rpm – the flattest torque curve among all of Toyota’s engines. The new turbo-diesel V8 engine has 23.7 per cent more power and 13.1 per cent more torque than the previous six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

Talking transmission, the new car comes with a five-speed manual transmission with two-speed transfer case and a part-time 4WD system with manual free-wheeling front hubs.

Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series Wagon

Toyota is dying to maintain its green image and with that respect the new car has a fuel economy of 11.5 litres/100km for Cab Chassis models (from 11.7) and 11.9 litres/100km for the new Wagon and Troop Carrier versions (from 12.0) when compared with the superseded turbo-diesel straight six.

The three body styles are

  1. Cab Chassis (LC79),
  2. Troop Carrier (LC78)
  3. and newly introduced Wagon (LC76).

The Cab Chassis model line-up is: Workmate, GX and GXL (which replaces RV grade). The three Troop Carrier models are Workmate three-seat, Workmate 11-seat and five-seat GXL. There are two new Wagon models: Workmate and GXL.
The new four-door Wagon, comes with two front bucket seats and a three-seat rear bench. The Troop Carrier offers three-seat or 11-seat Workmate grades or a five-seat GXL.

By consistently delivering reliability and durability, as well as legendary off-road and towing capabilities, the LandCruiser 70 Series has maintained a loyal following that is both unique and enduring,” Toyota Australia’s senior executive director sales and marketing, David Buttner

“The foundations for the market leadership that Toyota enjoys today were laid by the first batch of two-door LandCruiser FJ25s that worked on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme in 1958. The highest-quality engineering values instilled in that period have permeated the company and rippled through the Toyota brand – in all its models and different variants – ever since.”
Mr Buttner said.

Thursday 29th march 07. after first spotting and having a goodstick beak at the test model 70 series ute, I was smitten. I pick up my new Gxl cab chassis tomorrow arvo and can’t wait to go out on my own. I test drove it at Alan Mance Toyota Sunshine Victoria last Thursday and immediately bought it, then sold my very faithfull and bloody reliable 2001 turbo diesel. Its got tuns a grunt, Well done Toyota!!!!!!!!!

  • Paul Greenslade

Toyota US are indicating 245Kw from the new V8 diesel. Can only imagine that the chip kits for our 151Kw domestic V8 models won’t be far away.

I reported that I received my new GLX from the wrong people, I should have said LE-MANS TOYTA SUNSHINE, Victoria. Its now already travelled 400 klms and showing just over half of the first tank, All I can describe it as being compared to white lightening. Its handling is supurb, power unreal and economy is just awsome.Night lights, just brilliant and comfort plus. Top job again Toyota.

Some dealers told me they couldn’t get 1 till june/july and the dealer i bought mine through got it rite away and was alot more helpfull than most dealers. I cant wait coz i luv the new machine…

  • Steven Yap

    Dear Sir

May you advise where is the Landcrusier troop carrier is being produced and where can I order the vehicle from Asia countries?

    Thank you

    Steven

  • Ron Mason

I orderd my cab chassis early in March they told me may/june delivery but typical of the Arrogance of toyota it is now august/september maybe this is still not confirmed

  • Dean white

I also ordered a new gxl cab chassis in may and have been told delivery is in september but not garanteed. They also told me there is no toyota alloy bar for it yet

  • David Adams

I also ordered a new GXL cab chassis beginning of December and was told not to expect it until the end of February. From all the reports so far it should be a great vehicle but I have only seen one on display at the 4×4 show in Perth and not even had a chance at a test drive or even a test sit in. For now I will keep driving my 22 year old toyota turbo diesel dual cab chassis – still going strong. If anyone has one now how about some feedback on how they go. Questions – Is the fuel economy that good when loaded for work? – Have they given a bit more room in the cab for legs? – How does the spare tyre under tray effect the height of the tray, especially for the mag spare.

  • Andrew

I ordered a GXL cab chassis on the 15 june 2007 and it is still not here.Toyota tell me it is not in production yet. Every month they make up a differnt story.Toyota are the most usless arrogant company to deal with they dont care just a delivery date would be nice after all it has been over 7 MONTHS and still no ute.

  • David Adams

Well I have enjoyed my new GXL cab chassis for 3 weeks now. It arrived a few weeks earlier than the yard predicted. To answer a few of my questions earlier, the fuel economy is that good if you only ‘tonk’ around and don’t put the foot down which is hard with so much power coming out of the V8. Once you load it up with gear and trailer the economy drops off a bit but still better than my old 12HT turbo. I immediately noticed the extra 100mm in cab space compared to my old HJ cruiser and the foot rest for the clutch foot is great. The spare tyre under the tray seems to make little to no difference in the height of the tray, it depends on who makes the tray. Under the bonnet is packed except for one corner left clean for a second battery. I bought the cradle from ARB ($115) and ordered a smart electronic kit online for ($140) plus a battery. This is such a smoother car to drive, the engine is noticeably quieter than the old diesel, much more visibility, much, much more power, very comfortable bucket seats. Downsides – not much really – harder ride than wagons but it is a work ute, and I swapped the tyres straight away at the local tyre shop for better ones (straight swap) – oh yeah the speakers are a bit tinny.

    Hi
The Nppa is looking for a Land cruiser hard top diesel 4.2liters.

so please contact me, we need the left hand drive.

    Thanks

  • heath

I am looking for a new 70 series 5 door. Are these made with left hand drive for use in the US?

  • Stephen Lipshus

I must be missing the point.
Over 60K for a truck without traction control, airbags. You have to be kidding , right?.
Toyota are laughing at us Ozzies for being so moronic. It is not that Landcruisers and Hi-luxes are so good, it is just that the alternatives are so bad.

By the way, I have owned 3 80, 2 100 series and heaps of luxes.

    • josho

you hit the nail right on the head. I have a 06 RV ute($63k) with a GXL ute on order ($74k). We are MAD to pay it and Toyota are laughing their arse all the way to the bank but what else does one buy.

  • Jack Lee

    Hello Sir

Is there any truth in the rumor that the landcruiser v8 diesel needs a ring and piston overhaul at approximately 200000 Klms.
