Reminds me of the late Daihatsu Charade from about a decade ago. Timeless styling, I guess.
Kampfer
No auto will hurt sales big time in Australia. Personally I don’t mind a fully option 3 doors. Just under $20k + orc as a personal city transport. With panoramic roof and other features don’t see in this price point it’s a nice little car.
Zaccy16
I would rather that they don’t have a auto becauae instead of the one clutch auto overseas they might have put in a horrible 4 speed auto like the alto! which has a 0-100 time of more than 16 seconds and even longer with more than one person and luggage on board!
carbine
Manual would be my first choice in pretty much anything under 2.0 litres… but I’d take a conventional planetary gearset/torque converter auto any day over any of the stupid, expensive, fragile, unreliable and too-damn-smart-for-their-own-good single/dual clutch automatics (yes, I know all the wankers out there are going to start saying that they’re really manual gearboxes – like they think they’re shifting gears and disengaging the clutch themselves….).
Zaccy16
manual would be my first choice too, but modern cars with less than 2.0 with 6-7 speed autos are good but anything less than that is not enough eg. 4 speed auto
Deano305
DSG is not offered in the Up! Overseas, it has some new Electric Auto or something.
Golfschwein
It’s one automated clutch, as opposed to two. And not much chop, apparently.
Noel
Agree, no auto will hurt sales in Australia. I’m not a Volkswagen fan at all but I have to say these should walk out the door and finally an options list mere mortals can afford.
Norm
Overseas reviews say the auto is horrible anyway. If character is this cars strength then being a manual is probably a big part of that.
On paper it reads like a true successor to the original Beetle. A cheap little car with lots of character. That car resonated all over the world. I wonder if a car with 55kw in 2012 will do the same? Europeans seem to find small engines endearing..:)My only negative on what looks a great package is piano black on the dash. Whyyyyyyy!?
Greenroom
Toyota Starlet with bling. Good effort I guess. The Skoda version should beat it.
http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass
People should really learn to drive manual, too many lazy drivers around. I can see lots of young girls getting one of these as their first car, only to go and put a tank of 91 octane in it.
Zaccy16
Very good point Karl, i personally enjoy driving manuals, you feel more involved with the drive!
Homer
So how are you meant you hold your smoke, iPhone, sip coffee, tailgate and check your hair and lippy in the mirror AND change gears at the same time?
http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass
Don’t worry, they can still do all those things. Women can multi task.
Golfschwein
Ah, but I saw some brain scanning images in a conference presentation recently, Karl, that puts that myth to bed! You see, they think they can and they say they can and they give it a red hot go, but the colours of the scan were like lorikeets’ vomit compared to a simple bloke concentrating on one task. We’re all the same, we can only do one thing at a time. Girls will simply allocate lots of very short time periods for one thing at a time. Hey, so this expert reckoned, anyway
Homer
Golfy not true “allocate lots of short time periods for one thing at a time”. My wife allocates very long periods of time (hours!) talking on the phone
JamesB
Girls who smoke are turn-offs.
http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass
I guess the coffee will have to wait.
Golfschwein
Oh, too true! Not to mention the optional servicing. I knew a girl (a 40 year old one) who bought a brand new New Beetle convertible for 45-ish, then ran it for 45,000 km without a single service. Another did something similar to a Ford Focus and the motor seized. And ANOTHER is doing the same with a Hyundai Getz, and I can kinda imagine how that’s going to end up as well.
I appreciate it when salesmen describe a car as ‘one lady owner’, as it handily tells me to avoid it.
Mike
Hilarious. But didn’t they notice the warning lights in the dash? Must have looked like Christmas.
http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass
Warning light doesn’t cut it. Needs to squirt some water in their face, standard feature lol
MattW
I’ve seen female friends post up pics of warning lights on Facebook…
“what is it?”
“do I need to do anything?”
“this light won’t go away do i just covered it over so i don’t see it”
Igomi Watabi
Ah, misogyny. The comments section just gets better and better.
Mr Irony
And none of this sissy synchromesh either. Real drivers know the joy of double-declutching a crash box. Karl would have to agree.
F1
So it’s 15k without on road cost and with absolutely no options..
So expect the price to easily exceed 20k
–Too much for the Volkswagen Up!
Kd
Its $13,990 without ORC and no options.
Can’t you read?
Eric V
F is correct in suggesting that with the ORC and options the price will easily exceed 20K.
$13,990 without ORC and no options sounds enticing, but you can’t buy a car without ORC and without the options in the Up! it’s a bare-bones car and who wants that?
Mike
Me. I would take the options suggested by the review and be done.
Phil
Why can’t you buy this without options?
- Parking sensors….ummm this is a tiny car, why would you need them?
- Cruise control…..this is a city car – who is going to use cruise control in city streets?
- Sat-Nav – this is a car for short trips, who is going to need sat nav?
- Sunroof…..ummm barely any cars under $50K have one and there sure as hell are no cars under $20K with a standard sunroof. Why the hell would you expect one on a $13,990 car?
Plus even if you did get all those options and it cost $20K….well what other car can you get with all that for less money?
Craighazell
try the VW page and actually GET a price!
3dr for me?
$17500thats with no options drive away.
so :p
well under 20K with anything Id want to add to it
lord of darkness
my chery j1 at least has window controls on the drivers door ,alloy wheels and a usb stereo, even if it s a crappy stereo,it still has 6 speakers and its a 4 door hatch with a 4 cyl engine.yeh yeh blah blah, unsafe chinese car etc etc,its not that bad if you only drive it to work and round town,oh yes and I got it for $9990 drive away with trade it cost me $6000 for a new car with more gear than the vw.if the chinese can do it why cant any other company? and no my car was not affected by the recent recall before you mention that too. This vw upshould have drive away pricing at this small car level, because customers like me would rather have a cheap warrantied new car than a second hand piece of s…t.
Zaccy16
Used car would be so much better than that chinese rubbish! even VW haters would spend the extra on the up not to have a chery!
lord of darkness
obviously you havent had a look at them, millions of chinese dont have an issue with them, the build quality is the same as a 97 swift i had and with abs and 2 airbags it would have been top of the safety list 5 yrs ago
carbine
BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!
My Ford Laser cost me $750, won Wheels Car of the Year in 1981, had the build quality of a 1977 Corolla and would have been top of the safety list 35 years ago… BEAT THAT!
Zaccy16
wow the same build quality as a 15 year old car! that is amazing!
Mr Irony
You mean 35 year old car?
O123
Doesn’t your car also contain asbestos?
lord of darkness
seems like you have trouble reading,i said that my car wasnt affected by the recall, the chery j1 dosent have the asbestos problem like the others.Anyway, how many years have cars had this stuff in the gaskets and brake pads anyway.the amount in the other cars is hardly worth worrying with anyway, people like you piss me off because people are stuck in theyre ways and wont try something different .I dont buy my cars to please other people,I buy them because they suit my needs. Some of the second hand cars I lokked at for the price of mine were just crap with 80 to 100000km on them.the fact is Chery is one of the biggest car makers in china and australia is only a small part of the market they sell in.According to the public there are only ford ,holden and toyota on sale here.
lord of darkness
no ,try doing some research first before you bag out something
Zaccy16
didnt you get the asbestos warning sticker put on you chery?
carbine
Thanks for your insight, LofD… unfortunately that’s not really an option here in Victoria. The Chery J1 is not allowed to be sold here. Something to do with it not meeting minimum safety requirements.
matt
oh that idiot proof feature that makes sure you dont loose it if you dont drive to the conditions…. imagine that… being standard in victoria… hahaha
carbine
Have you seen how us Melbournians “drive”?
lord of darkness
dosent have esc thats why,how many other cars dont have it?
zej
I’m going to “like” that comment, because you actually paid someone money for a Chery J1… and publicly admitted it.
lord of darkness
not every one has a huge budget to get into a new car,for me the chery was a way into a warrantied car for a little money, its fine if you only use it for a work car as I do,how many people said hyundais were cheap rubbish when they came out?now there actually desirable cars.
zej
Desireable cars? Compared to what? Ok…. forget I asked….
T_A
Huyndai lifted their game because the Australian public woke up and realised they were cheap rubbish. Huyndai’s built quality is a lot better than it was in the late 90s / early 00s. BTW, I still would not buy one.
zej
I’m going to “like” that comment, because you actually paid someone money for a Chery J1… and publicly admitted it.
Kampfer
$13,990/$14,990 + $500 + $500 + $1400 + $600 + $2500 = $19490/$20490 + orc. I think it’s not a bad for the price given the equipment.
Car2012
How come the Up!, a newly developed car does not provide curtain air bags, but yet Suzuki Alto, Nissan Mirca, Honda Jazz & i20 does??? So I disagreed with the Up! being a benchmark and offering “sophistication”. Very disappointing from VW.
F1
Cost cutting..
I know who’ll buy these in droves, the Chinese, they love anything VW.
Keya
actually the chinese love the stuff you can’t afford, they’re nouveau riche now, like their cultural traditions since centuries ago,
you love sweet and sour pork,
Keya
ie they’ll buy LV GG CC bags, BMWs and Audis, they’re smart enough to buy a camry over any VW “mate”
Fg23
Chinese buy VWs in droves.
Kd
Yet it gets a 5 star safety rating that the Micra doesn’t get.
The side airbags extend up higher than the usual ones, offering protection for the head.
Dk
Too bad for the rear passengers though.
F1MotoGP
To be fair, much of the difference between the Up’s score and the Micra’s score is due to the Up having more seatbelt reminders.
yay
no air con vents in mid console, and no wind down window for 5 door?
Captain Nemo®™
Well said mate. No wind down rear windows is a joke seeing VeeDud’s A/C is the most woeful & weak failure prone A/C in the business. Like Grandma with asthma breathing on you.
Zaccy16
Weakest hey? well my polo tsi’s climate control is the best ac in a car ive ever had with great fan speed levels and face level air vents, its better than my 2005 mazda 6, territory i used to own, mazda 3 i used to own and the list goes on!
Michael Lock
You must have the exception, I tagged along with a girlfriend of mine test driving SUV’s (RAV4, Tiguan & Outback), we both commented on how woeful the VW a/c was.
We drove all cars on the same hot Perth summer day from late morning to mid arvo (VW was first in the late morning!!!), we had it on full and it just couldn’t cool the car down during a 30 minute test drive…useless.
We then took the Toyota, as expected ice cold. Then the Outback in the mid afternoon peak of heat and even without rear console vents it had the cabin cool within 5 minutes, top effort considering.
Maybe, me and captain nemo just scored duds but I think you may have the exception to the norm.
Legnab
I have owned a liberty and golfs , not just test drives and i can tell you both are excellent air cons , quick coolers .
Michael Lock
I was not expecting this Tiguan HVAC to be bad, as I always thought VW had great HVAC systems. You would expect this since their vehicles are sold in countries with very harsh climates like ours e.g. Middle East, Asia & Africa.
yay
same here, while their a/c are working all right except occasional puddle in the cabin (probably not all right to some), they’re rubbish compared with, say, a honda.
in my opinion the a/c doesn’t matter much though as the up! is marketed more like a gadget to people who “want one now(!)” You know that mindset, if it’s cool, they’ll find reasons to tell others it’s great.
Zaccy16
Maybe that tiguan was a one off
Homer
I live in Qld have a C series Benz and a Tiguan. No difference in air con performance. If you couldn’t cool the car in 30 minutes the air con was either faulty or mmmmm you didn’t have it switched on.
George
30 minutes? Most day-to-day driving trips would take less time.
Legnab
My guess is your right, not switched on , or the temp dial was on 35c , blind .
Vladimir
Strange
about the AC in Tiguan, I drove one in Europe and no issue. I drive Skoda Yeti
here in Oz. (basically the same car) and it cools the car very quickly even
after it has been in the sun and feels like an oven at first. See Jeremy Clarkson’s
video.
Legnab
Sapper nemo , tell us why the VE crummerdore had such horrendous problems with their air cons on hot days , so bad that it just stopped completely , dealers answer wait 10mins then restart , great when its 40c .
Lots of unhappy punters with that fiasco .
Captain Nemo®™
More fairy tales hey Bungle never heard of it. And i have had Commodores as hire cars and never had a problem with the A/C on hot days. Same with Falcons & Camrys never a problem. VeeDud just can’t do A/C as well as Japanese/Aussies or Koreans.
Legnab
ZERO i know of 3 reps who were first of the ranks in 2007 with the dreaded air con , just stopped dead on hot days .
I have had 2 hondas , 3 VW and a scoobie , no difference in air performance and all my cars were dark with lids .
More myths from the VK crummer supporters club .
Dom
Glad something on the VW works!
Robin_Graves
Oh your reps again. Dont you get it? The reps are trying to sell you things. They tell you what you want to hear. They know you are a deluded VeeDud fanboi and hater of local cars so they feed you all these stories to get on side with you.
Legnab
Medical reps grave robber , not plumbing .
They solved the issue when they ditched their chinese supplier , no wonder fleet sales are down .
Funny ones got an i30 another an aurion while one is still driving a ticking VE , lucky its not a falcoon .
Captain Nemo®™
Oh please tell us why you’re talking to medical reps when you work in a pot shop in Gouger street.
Robin_Graves
Dental dams, speculum and enema kits?
carbine
Seriously, how often do you wind down the rear windows in your car anyway? Perfectly happy with a ‘pop-out’ window if it keeps the price down.
Legnab
Very true carbine not required with good air , pop outs look retro .
http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass
You wouldn’t say that if you were in the back seat.
Captain Nemo®™
Carbine anyone who carries dogs in their car would love wind down rear windows. VeeDud A/C is the most gutless & woeful A/C on the market so wind down rear windows in the Throw-Up! is a must.
al
It’s disgusting to carry dogs inside a car…yuck!
hippo
Well you couldn’t put it on the OUTSIDE if you were in a Chery. The label on the roofrails says they’re cosmetic only and not to be used!
hippo
Well you couldn’t put it on the OUTSIDE if you were in a Chery. The label on the roofrails says they’re cosmetic only and not to be used!
Robin_Graves
Imagine the outcry from the VeeDud fanbois if another manufacturer released a car with pop out rear windows? They try and turn it around into a redeeming feature. Nothing but cheap and nasty cost cutting, and its still overpriced!
Zaccy16
Definatly best in class! their are much better used cars than its rivals eg. alto, spark, s16 and micra
F1orce
This vehicle is very funny.
F1orce
The center console looks like it was ripped off the Audi A8.. Which isn’t saying much about the A8.
Golfschwein
VW Australia: Send some Up!s to Australia, please.
VW Factory: Grey interior, then?
VW Australia: Of course!
Golfschwein: Just like all car makers do.
F1orce
Why don’t they sell this in the U.S market?
Mike
Because you could only fit two Americans inside – one front, one back.
James Cortez
North American Highway (States / Canada) are wider than Australian roads, more lanes. Many family size SUVs which are considered normal size in NA but Australians considere them large. That’s why moron. It has nothing to do with teh size of Average American. Many OZs here in the middle east are FAT too.
Legnab
Correct the chevy (holden) barina spark only has one seat front and back .
Luke Brinsmead
Because it’s too small for their big country.
yay
because mexican vw got assigned to produce the beetle, if they ship them from elsewhere, pricing advantage will disappear.
Sumpguard
Looks, Funky style?
We must be looking at two different sets of imges CA! I see bland ,boring and cheap looking. It seems anything VW must command a positive comment from the media regardless.
If it had a Korean badge on it ,it would be getting described as dull ! That centre stack looks bargain basement too.
Luke Brinsmead
If it had a Kia badge on it I would think it’s a surprisingly good effort by Kia. The lastest Rio almost looks like it could wear a VW/SEAT badge.
Sumpguard
The latest KIA Rio is a better looking car than the Polo.
Kami
Totally Agreed…I saw one Kia Rio SLS the other day and I couldn’t believe how much they have improved in looks ~ Both of these cars definitely in my shopping list next year. Unfortuantely, I don’t really like the name Up!…imagine people put the middle finger and said Up!….Your$$
Sumpguard
…and if it goes wrong they’ll call it a *%^& up!
Zaccy16
The polo won’t date and looks classy and mature when the rio looks good but will date very quickly! kias don’t look as dated as hyundais though, the ix35 already looks 5 years old!
Sante Clause
I actually don’t mind the Polo (t olook at) but classy and mature it ain’t. I also suspect the RIO will age well.
Luke Brinsmead
I somewhat agree with you, the Polo only looks ok with big rims/wheels. On a side note, I think the new Golf 7′s headlights look a little bit similar to the first generation Cee’d.
F1orce
Buddy Kia are much better cars then SEAT!! By a long shot..
Wtf SEAT? Shouldn’t even be mentioned with the same sentence as KIA
Luke Brinsmead
I mean’t appearance wise, not quality – The Rio looks a little bit like the Leon from the rear. Anyway, SEAT mostly use VW parts so their reliability isn’t too bad. But their assembly skills might be…
F1orce
Double standards..
J123
“which makes it sound like the latest smartphone from a Korean copycat factory”.
Dedicated Apple user?
Keya
was goin’ to say, probably lined up right now for an iphone 5…
and wt/ is “…is actually built at the same Slovakian factory that makes the Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, so you can almost suggest the quality control is up to Porsche standards.” suggest not.
if anybody’s copyin the koreans it’s the world with gangnam style…
Shak
Gangnam Style is actually Korean though…
matt
lol its stupid isnt it… its obviously a prefered design for what it is… like cars have 4 wheels (mostly) and a steering wheel…. that brand of light bulb looks like that one…. hey i can open the door on this fridge… just like this other brand… god bless america and its ill sue you greedy mentality, more to the point a telecommunications device preference??? christ grow up
Luke Brinsmead
This Up! was designed for generation Y who want a relatively affordable, well designed unique car which has brand coolness.
Shak
It seems to me that if they didn’t put that party piece radar braking system standard on every model, they could’ve included more (read some) standard equipment in the car. Most people who are buying this car just for A to B purposes wouldn’t care or even know how the system works, so the ‘brilliance’ of it would be lost on them.
Mick Dunn
And yet I applaud them for making a safety feature standard and the toys optional. Every car should be the same – full safety suite standard and pay extra for the stuff that really sells.
Shak
Yes its a win for safety, i agree. However i was thinking purely from a selling point of view (which is what VW does). Having that little party trick wont boost sales to the types of people who will buy this car as much as a chintzy sat nav unit, or bluetooth streaming would. Sad, but true.
Robin_Graves
What a horrible little car. At least being basic it may last a bit longer than it’s bigger siblings. Another fail from VeeDud.
Guest
Another useless comment from the grave man. Maybe it’s time to let him go to his grave?
Golfschwein
I’m with you. The negativity is tiring. By all critical accounts, it’s a brilliant small car that drives like one from the next class up, a whole world away from Suzukis and Barinas.
Hung Low
Your morning glory over this pie van is tiring! It is priced the same as the next class up, only with less room, less power, less features and a reputation in reliability that is parallel to a modern Lada!
Golfschwein
There’s a lack of manners from people here that’s also very tiring. The concept of ‘speak only when spoken to’ or ‘if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all’ is completely lost on some here and points to a probable lack of mothering. Which I know I can’t blame you on. After all, if Mother wasn’t around…or was it your father…anyway, you get ma drift.
Hung Low
How is an opposing opinion on a public forum a lack of manners? At least I know who my real father is, you and your mama are still sifting through the encylopedia of possibilities. A childhood near a truckstop must have been rough days for you.
Legnab
Fung so whats your opinion on the barina spark the alto etc etc .
Size is the measure here , some only buy on price and the sour taste of the poor purchase lasts .
Others prefer to pay more even if smaller , for good design , quality build etc , if their happy they will pay more .
CAR makers always sell at the price the market will bear , and VAG have been very successfull of late with big sales gains .
Zaccy16
Exactly legnab! who wouldn’t want to pay a little extra money for a quality product!
Fahkofff
You are the biggest VAG here.
Luke Brinsmead
Some people have spent a bit more and bought a Smart car thinking they made a smart decision. I think the price is ok because it’s a new product, but compared to Polo driveaway prices at the moment it may seem a bit pricey.
Zaccy16
13,990 is not a class above i would spend the extra money for this to have a good car any day over a alto or barina and im sure many other people will too!
Zaccy16
Exactly! thats why it is such a good car because nothing came come close to its refinement, quality and on road performance!
Legnab
Back in your tired old falcoon G6E pensioner special , this is the future for all the dino’s out there, small is cool so get used to it , try selling your worthless barge , sorry no takers .
Trevor
i now see why everyone here bags the sh1t out of you.
Garrywhopper
Small is cool, yeah rad man. You have a small doodle, your cool
Luke Brinsmead
What sort of comment is that?
Legnab
He is nether region obsessed , never makes a car comment .
Garrywhopper
You want a car comment well i will summarise every post you have ever made,Crummer, falcon bad, VW good. How’s that.
Legnab
So thats me, big deal , back on your scooter .
Mr Irony
VW good for mechanics.
twincharger
Legnad dont you sell pots and pans in the Adelaide hills?
Legnab
Plumbing mate , iam the tap man , VW multi vans all over the hills , cant miss them bright pink , good for 500,000km no probs .
Mong!
Pfffft
Hung Low
Plumbing and you have medical reps visit!! Sounds like you are running a enema clinic Bungle.
Bob222
Stop trolling RG bargy barge driver.
Trevor
you are just as bad as Legnab. maybe you two should meet?
MattW
Saw one on the road on Sunday (dealer joyriding?)… personally I wouldn’t list “looks” as a positive. But its got a VW badge on it, so there is a bunch of people that will love it
Zaccy16
Thats because its built in china thats why the chines buy it! like no one overseas would buy commodores as much as we do
marcus davis
I honestly cant understand why any one would being interested ! i just bought new ford fiesta cl off the floor for $14500 , and love it ! it handles great, good performance, its quiet, features u want,5.6L/100k and u wanna be seen in the UP(not cheap just nasty) $18 k ish up ! take a photo of yourself in it first before you buy it ! do you realy want it now ? makes me sick just lookin at it . i think i just threw ”UP”
Sante Clause
I honestly cant understand why any one would being interested !
People buy X6 BMW’s too!
Golfschwein
99+ comments, Marcus, so people are interested, alright. Even those who don’t like it are having a red hot go. By comparison, only 4 have bothered to pass comment on the brand new Volvo V40 Cross Country.
Not in any way detracting from the acknowledged excellence of your new Fiesta, this is shaping up to be a game changer in micro cars. Forget the price/size/equipment/engine size comparables, people will be lining up for one of these simply because they want one. And you’d relate to that. After all, you wanted your Fiesta, didn’t you? Enjoy your new cars, people, whatever they are.
Zaccy16
Well said! finally a reasonable comment on this thread!
Sumpguard
So what your saying is that the 12 comments you have already made prior to this one are unreasonable Zaccy?
Hung Low
Zaccy, this troll is the biggest hypocrite on these blogs. Just on this thread he has…….demeaned women, slandered other competing brands, taken personal swipes and then contradicts himself with this post. Golfswine is the dog turd underones shoe, a pretentious hater in sheeps clothing.
Golfschwein
Gorgeous dummy-spit!!! Nyek nyek nyek. Uncle Golfschwein commands you to sit in the corner and not to turn around until you can be nice to people. Goochy goochy goo and all that
Legnab
Mr fung must have swallowed a vat of acid today , always gets down in the gutter when hes ignored .
PoisonEagle
It looks like a suppository. Get it up! ya.
Nah honestly I’ll reserve judgement until I drive one, but that price is not +ORC. You aren’t getting Polo/Golf quality for that price, you’re getting 3/4 of a B segment car with some hipster hype.
al
They will sell bucketloads of them…Good job keeping it light at 880kg!!! I was waiting for common sense returning into the car market for a long time!!!
PoisonEagle
Actually I’m glad to read that too. I hope that doesn’t affect safety though…
Wile E Coyote
Ateco should bring the Fiat Panda to Oz.From all reports its better than the VW Up.
The Toyota IQ would be good too.
yay
yeah, i’d like a panda too, it’s more classless, but no toyota iq please.
Stone
The recognised German Automobile Magazine “Auto, Motor und Sprt” (Car, Motor and Sports) has tested the SKODA Mii , which is a badge-engineered twin of the VW Up!
Unfortunately the “Mii” in fully laden condition was unable gain sufficient speed to safely enter the german ”Autobahn” (highways) even on to the truck lane. So, if you consider buying your son or daughter his/her first car , be wise and some chose some safer and more powerful vehicle. Whowever may build that. ( May be something different if your wife needs a new car )
Golfschwein
I looked for the test and couldn’t find it. Did they test the 59 hp or 75hp version? In any case, shouldn’t be surprised at the results. What did they expect? Wrong horse for the course, I’d call it.
Mr Irony
How long is the warranty? Just wondering.
Jr
VW needs to make hatches with back seats that fold FLAT. They should not have put that smile in the front bumber. There already are enough cars that seem to have that annoying smile. No not being petty. Manual gear is good.
vladimir
I would not buy Chery car, but you are soooooooo right that the avaradge Aussies car buyer is close minded when it comes to other car brands. BTW I drive a Skoda Yeti 4×4 diesel and love it.
http://5reasonreviews.com/
This car will be hugely popular – like Ikea – this is European fashion at cheap prices. Expect to see it everywhere
Bascia2
Test drove on the weekend. It does have Golf/Polo quality feel. Aircond was excellent. Drives really well and actually feels more spacious than a Golf (must be the height). Hate the standard plastic hubcaps so will add alloys and the Navigon option to the basic 3 door when I buy. Makes a Suzuki Alto look like a kiddies pedal car. Fixed price servicing for the first 6 annual services as well. Will be getting an insurance quote next before final decision or maybe see what Skoda does.
Kenny Bris
Was put off by the driveaway price of 17k+ for the 5 doors, excluding any option. The car performs great with its little engine. But with this high price, one can expect a bigger car like the Jazz 1.3 which is going at 15,990 driveaway.
http://www.facebook.com/scott.lewis.399826 Scott Lewis
Prices seem to have come down recently. I bought one last week for $14,700 “drive-away” (including registration etc.), and might have been able to shave another $100 off. The salesman told me it was the first up! sold from that dealership. Manual, no bluetooth/maps, and no metallic paint.
I hadn’t really intended to buy it, was just quite curious. But the car just made a lot of sense to me as I rode in it. Suspension really is good, and the engine moves it along better than one would think. Comfortable, very plain design.
I don’t think I would have spent more than that, however. I had been looking at a used Holden Cruze, a used Subaru Impreza, or, for somewhat more money, a Suzuki Kishashi. What made me opt for the up! in the end was that I’m quite sure we’ll be paying close to $2 a litre for petrol before the end of 2013. That impacts not only the operating costs, but the sales value when I go to trade it in during 2015.

Bought a red three door with Maps + More in early December. Got free mudflaps thrown in and traded 2002 Mazda Premacy. Drove away for $11,999.99. Commuting partly on highway in summer holidays was easily averaging 4.0l/100km and now traffic has returned 4.5l/100km. I have since added window tint (dealership), matching seat covers and rubber floor mats (Supercheap) and thinking about aftermarket alloys. Only complaint so far is no light in boot so I added a magnetic torch for $9. This is a great car for two and excellent on highway trips. The trip computer regularly records 2.9l/100km on flats at 100km/hr and downhill the fuel shuts off to the engine when you are coasting in gear and therefore uses zero. Very happy with the car. And it does have aircon vents in the middle. Its just that they are on the top of the dash and fixed.
