Volvo has revealed the first image of its new S60 Concept in the lead up to its official debut at the Detroit Motor Show in early January 2009.

Its design is intentionally aggressive with the brand boasting that the all-new S60 will deliver a sporty drive like no Volvo before.

When the production model is launched in 2010, Volvo aims to position the new S60 as a serious contender in the premium sports sedan market.

“We both can, and dare, to deliver more exciting and more dynamic designs while maintaining our lead position in safety.” says Stephen Odell, President and CEO at Volvo Cars.

The concept’s exterior is touted to give a clear indication of what customers can expect from the production model; however designers have been far more daring on the inside.

“In a concept car the aim is to give your imagination a free rein and our iconic super-slim centre stack was the perfect object. Using pure crystal is a thrilling experiment. We may well see interior features in crystal-like materials in the future,” says Steve Mattin.

The centre stack in the concept model has been hand-crafted from Orrefors crystal – a feature undeniably spectacular although unlikely to make it into the production version.

I’m not a fan of the white interior but I love the exterior, maybe even more than any other car in that segment right now, except the XF. Beautiful. Makes me wonder how practical the next V70 will be if Volvo keeps turning out these lovely cars. Volvo are really starting to change their cars to desirability over reliability and saftey (although they are that too, along with great build quality).

Sorry, I now see that the interior is only white to emphasise the crystal.

Should have had your crystal balls out and known that Alex.
I totally agree with your comments esp the XF. Designers of car interiors have been far too traditional in their outlook or is that the buyers want a traditional look. Fords latest Fiesta IMO has a great stylish interior but still a klittle traditional. Fiat are also coming up with decent alternatives.
This looks like any other Volvo but with a few more curves.
    Nice either way.

I’m in heaven! Had an s60R, now have an xf. Looking to move my missus out of her s40T5, and (after being underwhelmed by the xc60 in the flesh) this looks the goods (in my totally uninformed, uneducated view). Volvo are really underrated, IMO, in looks and performance. The s40T5 would eat the standard 318, for the same price, but the three R’s – ride, ridicule, and resale – are still a problem for it. Here’s hoping that this one is good, and here’s hoping they build an R version (hah, not likely!)

Mmmm, tasty. I still find it hard to believe I just said that about a Volvo.

The Jag XF looked like the Volvo and now the Volvo looks more like the Jag. I guess Tata din’t buy the drawing blueprints.

  • Alex

What do you mean the Jaguar XF looked like the Volvo Volk613? What Volvo?

  • Myke

I always thought the XF had a Volvo-esque look about it, not a bad thing of course, the new Volvos look great.

  • Twilight

    quite literally – STUNNING.

i like it better then the XF…

when I went from the s60 to the xf, a friend remarked that all volvo drivers aspire to becoming jag drivers. there might be something in that. I saw other drawings of the s60 concept (in a caramel colour), and I might say that the darkness flatters it, though this might be a more advanced, and far better design.

    Looks a little Aston-ish.

  • o

wow.volvo concepts usually make it to production relatively unchanged

  • Car_Enthusiast

The Front end on that Volvo S60 looks a bit like the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia. Not like thats a bad thing, cause they are both (Volvo & Vauxhall) are good looking cars, hopefully the back of this car looks good as well

Hey, you can get a free downloadable game from the volvo Oz site with the GTR Evolution type dynamics, featuring the s60 concept. It is pretty good, about 600mb, two tracks, can use a wheel or keyboard. Did I mention it is free? and has volvos in it?? Has other models too (all volvo) but no R (grrr) probably coz they would put the concept to shame. But it’s free!
