Renault Clio RS: baby hot-hatch uncovered

CarAdvice’s spy photographers have captured the all-new Renault Clio RS and what is believed to be the sportier Gordini variant almost entirely undisguised as the French hot-hatch enters the final stages of testing.

Differentiating the new Renaultsport model from the standard Renault Clio range is a broad front lower air intake that once again incorporates an F1-inspired aero splitter, as well as the car’s lower ride height, larger wheels and brakes and sportier rear end with a bigger spoiler and diffuser.

The black prototype appears to be the standard Clio RS, while the white vehicle is believed to be the hotter Clio Gordini RS given its split tailpipe layout and larger matt black wheels.

The new 2013 Renault Clio RS will be a very different car to the city-sized Renaultsport hatchback it replaces.

The new model will trade the existing car’s naturally aspirated 2.0-litre engine for a turbocharged 1.6-litre powerplant.

As it has over the previous four generations, power is expected to climb marginally, while the new forced induction arrangement is rumoured to boost torque to as high as 270Nm.

Renaultsport has pulled another 180 in the transmission department, switching from exclusively manual gearboxes to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic unit with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

More torque, faster gearshifts and a reduced body weight (the standard Clio IV shed around 100kg compared with the old model) should see the new model improve markedly over the outgoing car’s 6.9-second 0-100km/h sprint.

Unlike the current Clio RS200 that comes only as a three-door, all new Clio Renaultsports will be five-doors, with the rear door handles concealed in the C-pillars to mimic a coupe profile.

The new Clio Renaultsport is expected to hit Australian showrooms around the end of 2013, following the reintroduction of the standard Clio range in the middle of the year.

Tiida on steriod = WIN :)

OMG run for the hills. If a German car can’t get DSG reliability what chance would one have with a French car?

      Exactly!

No manual and no three door, oh why oh why!! I took my brother’s 05 182 Cup out last night and just remembered how much fun my 03 Clio 172 SII was. The 2.0L NA will be sorely missed. This is totally different car. Well at least keep the three door!!

    Very. Very. Nice.

    Looks great!

Interesting decision to offer it only with an automatic transmission. I think it’s fair to say that most current Clio RS buyers will now look elsewhere when they decide to replace their current car.

    Looks terrible,like a bloated Corolla

agreed, that front end is a just ugly with those bug eyes. suprisingly this time around its the peugeot that looks the goods, shame, as renault did make good cars.

I don’t see any brembos. I don’t see any recaro seats. Seems to be a similar car to the polo gti. Might be good as everyday vehicle finding a bigger market. But if it’s not hardcore like my rs200 than I won’t be a returning customer. We count on Renault sport for delivering race cars for the road but this is not. Very impressed with Renault sport cars I’ve owned very reliable and fast so not sure why we have comments ditching it for French reliability. Owners of these cars generally drive harder than most and they still live on with high kms. Subaru Wrx pretty dodgy though for racers. Maybe this car should just use regular Renault badge and save the rs name for manual track friend. Shame that the f4r motor is gone, what a nutter it is. Mine still gets close to 600 km per tank so maybe emissions are the issue.

Looks great, but if there’s no manual gearbox i’m not interested.

    No Manual.. what a waste.

  • Brayden_cresswell

    That front end.

  • PoisonEagle

*sigh. What a shame the NA era is dead. All the cars are becoming a facsimile of each other .Turbos, more weight, no manual, bluetooth facethingy.  Honda seems to be the only ones reppin the atmo screamers, but even they went soft , and are rumored to be following the same route. Raw fun hot hatches are going to be a thing of the past I’m afraid…
