Sorry folks but I have to disagree. There is a massive amount of research evidence to show that advanced driving courses have either no effect or a detrimental affect on a drivers subsequent crash risk.
Get rid of the ‘fast car’ ads and promote the NSW pinkie campaign for far better road trauma reduction results.

Its great to see that people are positive towards this article – any suggestions how we can get more people to realise the value in such courses? We work very hard to get noticed but people are more interetsed in spending money on piano or ballet lessons for their kids!!

A lot of people think its about racing and will increase confidence levels. Well yes – confidence is important when your driving something that weights 1000kg at 100km/h wouldnt you think? But more importantly – isnt it a good idea to know how to stop and turn and maybe save your life or that of someone else.

Agree wholeheartedly with this. I am horrified with the number of L-drivers sitting in the right lane while not overtaking anything and no indicating, picking up the bad habits of the parents.

Training like this always gives you some form of ability in driving.

What I’ve never understood is why it’s compulsory to do similar (though not as technical) testing for motorcycle licenses but not for cars.

Same road, same laws, same accidents. Sure, you could argue bikes are more dangerous. But as a well experienced motorcyclist and motorist I’d say drivers who aren’t deserving of their license are the ones that are dangerous, putting others lives at risk, regardless of motor vehicle. The end result is determined whether or not you have some metal and airbags surrounding you or a pair of leathers or jeans.

I’m sure putting driver training like this would be received in uproar by the general public. But since when did the Government listen to the people? Think about it, a decision like this would be received no better or worse than any other decision they make. It has never stopped them in the past, why stop now.

So, bring in the driver training I say. For the benefit of everyone.

Great idea.

For those that haven’t seen the latest Top Gear UK episode, James May gets some driving tuition from Mika Hakkinen. In that segment they gave a very brief insight into what kids have to do to get a licence in Finland. Extraordinarily thorough and involves night driving, skid pan experience and whole manner of other seemingly obvious things.

No argument from me.
But ultimately, make professional tuition compulsory prior to attaining a license and retest every time your license is renewed. Like the article says, its not just about parking & U turns but all types of scenarios including gravel & wet road techniques.
I’ve done a few, once with Ed Ordynski which was a blast. The last one I did 4 years ago was a compulsory work supported program with a day doing city peak hour driving and then a day on country roads.
Apart from tuning and learning a few extra basic and advanced control techniques they are heaps of fun. Especially in someone else’s car.
