The all-new Ford Mondeo has made its world premiere in Amsterdam, revealing for the first time the new wagon and hybrid variants and a number of segment-first technologies.

The first model to be built on the company’s new global medium-large CD-segment platform, Ford says the fifth-generation Mondeo will be the most premium vehicle it has ever offered in Europe when it goes on sale in the second half of 2013.

The all-new Ford Mondeo sedan and wagon will launch in Australia a few months later, although both body styles appear unlikely to reach our shores until the first half of 2014.

New to the line-up is the Mondeo Hybrid sedan, which teams a specially developed 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a 35kW lithium ion battery, promising high fuel economy and low CO2 emissions.

Another first is a diesel-powered all-wheel drive variant, which Ford says is designed to deliver superior traction, performance and handling.

Ford confirmed on Thursday the entry-level Mondeo would be powered by the company’s tiny 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 92kW and 170Nm of torque (200Nm on overboost).

Australia’s Mondeo line-up will be far less diverse, however. Ford Australia says neither the 1.0-litre EcoBoost nor the hybrid are on the agenda for our market, and while it is not commenting on the diesel AWD at this stage, that model appears more specifically targeted to European winter conditions.

The 2013 Ford Mondeo showcases the manufacturer’s new global design language, combining elegant lines with chiselled, purposeful details.

The sedan’s roofline flows like a coupe while the wagon sports stunning proportions and incorporates a retractable panoramic glass roof.

The Mondeo will become the first vehicle in Europe’s medium segment to offer full LED adaptive headlights and inflatable rear seatbelts – the latter designed to disperse crash forces across an area of the body five times greater than that achieved by a conventional seatbelt, reducing the risk of head neck and chest injuries.

The MyFord Touch voice-activated in-car connectivity system will also feature in the 2013 Mondeo. The system’s eight-inch touchscreen incorporates phone, audio, navigation and climate control functions, and has the ability to act as a WiFi hotspot for up to five devices.

More details on the all-new Ford Mondeo are expected to be revealed when it takes to the stand at the 2012 Paris motor show later this month.

Looks great!! Especially the 5door liftback version. Pity Mazda dropped that with the new 6. This’ll definitely give the mazda6 a run for its money.

    • Michael Lock

It is not a liftback, just a normal sedan that looks like one. Mazda 6 has done the same thing with their new model being released soon.

      • Jazrod

Ford EU revealed the liftback today, too. The new Mondeo will have three body styles, unlike the Fusion. The car pictured is the sedan, however.

        • Michael Lock

          My apologies then.

look in the photo gallery – both shapes there liftback and sedan

It wont give the mazda 6 a run for its money for one reason, its going to be one year to late!

  • Showtime

Wow that is a great looking car.

  • Dudeface

One of these is definitely on the list for the next car for the missus. Hopefully we get the interesting models here in Aus (Ecoboost 2L and AWD please!)

  • tiddy

    The interior looks very classy

That sedan looks very nice indeed. I know everyone is remarking about design cues from other manufacturers (and for me there is more than a little Audi in that shot) but you still have to make them all work together. I would definately take the 2.0 Ecoboost sedan over the slowly dying Falcon.

  • F1

There’s lots of Kia Optima on that sedan, especially the rear 3 quarters an the rear lights are literally ripped out and slightly restyled (uglier) from the Optima Kia

btw I thought the current mondeo looked good on the photos but it looked pretty bad in person..

    • Dudeface

So, you do know that the rear lights are very similar to the outgoing Mondeo? And that the outgoing Mondeo predates the Optima by about 4 years?

Lol, do you ever get anything right F1?

  • Andywcustom

The 2013 wagon was supposed to be my next car I planned to buy mid next year. Now that we won’t see it here until 2014 I may have to look elsewhere. Annoying really…

    • Phil

Last time, they didn’t release the wagon here untill a additional two years after the sedan so you could be waiting untill 2016!

I can (almost) understand Ford Australia not wanting the 1L EcoBoost engine in the new Mondeo, but now I hear they’re not introducing the hybrid here? Then again, I suppose that the (sales) numbers won’t stack up. It’s a bit of a shame, really.

    • Zandit75

Considering Ford Australia is touting their Diesel models as being better than Hybrids, I think it is a good move on Ford Oz behalf to stick with this strategy.

  • Zaccy16

Wagon still looks too big and ugly at the rear!

  • MCDC

There’s a fundamental styling error with this car. The feature line running through the door handles is horizontal with the road surface. Makes the car look bloated and not at all dynamic. If the line were to run from lower down on the front wheel arch to higher up on the C pillar it would look a whole lot better. It’s seems a pretty fundamental mistake for Ford to make…. oh well.

  • Keya

    gotta love aston martin

  • Matto Pirates

The lease on my bmw is up late 2014. I’d love the sedan with awd/diesel if Ford aus will allow me.

Does anybody know if the the New Mondeo is going to be at the Sydney International Motor Show in October this year ?

  • Observer

    Classy wagon indeed
