Peugeot 208 GTi: French pocket rocket revealed

The highly anticipated Peugeot 208 GTi has been revealed ahead of its Paris motor show debut later this month, with the French manufacturer releasing the first official details and images of its upcoming city-sized hot-hatch.

Just six months after Peugeot whet our appetites with the 208 GTi concept at the 2012 Geneva motor show, the all-new Peugeot 208 GTi claims to “regenerate the values of the iconic 205 GTi” and promises proper hot-hatch performance.

As expected, the 208 GTi features the familiar 147kW/275Nm 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Peugeot RCZ sports coupe, giving it an edge over the Audi A1 (136kW/250Nm), Clio RS200 (147kW/215Nm), Ford Fiesta ST (132kW/240Nm) and the Volkswagen Polo GTI (132kW/250Nm).

With a six-speed manual transmission sending drive to the front wheels, Peugeot says the 1160kg lightweight sprints from 0-100km/h in under 7.0 seconds.

When driven more sedately, the Peugeot 208 GTi emits just 145 grams of CO2 per kilometre, which roughly translates to a fuel consumption rating of 6.1 litres per 100km.

Compared with the standard Peugeot 208 hatch, the GTi scores a unique anti-roll bar, stiffer springs, recalibrated shock absorbers and enhanced sub-frame and rear cross member rigidity, along with firmer, more precise steering.

The GTi’s track is 10mm wider at the front and 20mm wider at the rear. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels that are wrapped in 205/45 tyres and house 302mm front disc brakes and 249mm rears.

Visually, the three-door-only 208 GTi features new halogen headlamps, gloss black mesh grille with chrome inserts, matching rear skirting with trapezoidal chrome dual exhausts, silver mirror caps and – in a nod to the 205 GTi – a chrome window sill strip.

Inside, the Peugeot 208 GTi sports a red and black colour scheme, with red-stitched black leather/cloth sports seats and upholstery, high-gloss red-painted door grabs and dashboard inserts, aluminium pedals and gear knob, and a red-lit instrument cluster with brushed aluminium background, white needles and a black chequered flag motif.

The Peugeot 208 GTi launches in the UK in the second quarter of next year, just under a year after the standard Peugeot 208 range was introduced in June of this year.

The basic 208 range launches in Australia this month, and will be joined by the GTi variant in June 2013. Peugeot Australia’s Jaedene Hudson confirmed the GTi would be priced to compete with its German namesake, the Volkswagen Polo GTI, which costs $27,790 in three-door, dual-clutch DSG form.

Looks great, appropriately sporty without looking tacky. I hope it drives like we all want it to, they did say that if they were going to bother they were going to do it properly, lets hope they’ve kept their word and remember what “properly” feels like.

    208, more like 20-late. Booyah

Looks like a nice car though

looks like a yaris on steroids.

  • Mick Dunn

If this thing drives alright then it could get a few defections from the RenaultSport camp when the new 5 door, auto only RS Clio comes out.

  • Galaxy

Peugeot….never again…. no way.  Once bitten twice shy.

    • Noddy of Toyland

The 208 is a very nice looking car – the GTI should also be a great drive – but it looks a tad tame for a sports model in comparison to some rivals. Peugeot should have blacked out the chrome and maybe made the bumper a tad more aggressive.

  • Gaylord

I love this car, seat feels great when not wearing pants.

Only peugeot that is at all desirable, interior isnt up to VW standards

    • Patto

You can tell that the interior isn’t up to “VW standards” from a picture? You’re a genius.

      • Zaccy16

Yeas you can, the tacky plastic stands out!

        • Patto

An objective observer would wait until he or she inspected the vehicle in person before forming such an opinion. Do you know what objective means?

          • Zaccy16

have you read the reviews patto of the normal models? they tell you about the interior

          • Patto

I have read several reviews on the 208. They were mostly positive regarding the interior. But again, I like to form my own opinions, rather then just regurgitate someone else’s. It’s pretty fun forming an opinion. You should try it some time.

My opinion is VW Polos interior is better quality, is that a alright opinion patto?

          • Eskylid69

you havent been in a 207 GTi have you Zac -would give you a point to make a REAL opinion from, the interior quality is far far beyond VW, materials are very good. seems your just another armchair commentator.

How ironic – the Golf was just revealed today having a giant slab of plastic as its centre console.

      • Hung Low

A familiar line used by all these VW cronies!

      • Guest

VW Interiors may be high quality but they’re boring and bland as hell. At least this Peugeot has some uniqueness in it.

  • barw

how is this allowed to be called the GTi?

I’m surprised VW isn’t already suing Peugeot, everyone who owns peugeot and their mothers and dogs

    • JamesB

VW owns the rights to GTI (with capital I), not GTi.

      • Leno

GTi is 1.4L engine TG and GTI is 1.8L TG engine.
        Smart people read twice

The Peugeot GTi label has been around since the 80s, from the 205 GTi. It’s still a decade or so younger than the Golf GTI name but it is not completely unoriginal…

The instrument cluster seems to be too high – might be a problem for shorter drivers.

  • Andrew

Was hoping they would get the weight under 1000kg for the GTi as well.

  • Schn

Red lit instrument cluster design is well executed. I quite like it. Clean, simple, yet also stylish.

  • Legnab

  • Nick Walker

I would rather a simple stripper model 208 gti for the sports minded and a delux gti model for people wanting to pay more for interior niceties. ala the gt86.

Great looks… one for the record Peugeot…;)
