BMW Zagato roadster concept headed for Pebble Beach

A convertible version of the BMW Zagato concept will be unveiled later this week at the 2012 Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, California.

The concept marks the second collaboration this year between the premium German manufacturer and the legendary Milan-based design and engineering firm, coming three months after the original Z4-based BMW Zagato coupe concept (pictured below) wowed crowds at the Concours d’Elegance in Lake Como, Italy.

As the grainy teaser image reveals, the Pebble Beach concept will be almost identical to the one unveiled in May, but will abandon its hardtop coupe design for a sleek and sporty roadster layout.

Like the coupe, the BMW Zagato roadster concept will intertwine the design traditions of the two companies, incorporating BMW’s signature kidney grille with intricate matt metallic ‘Z’ lettering; a long, low bonnet and a deep-set driving position; and Zagato’s distinctive ‘Kamm tail’ rear-end.

The BMW Zagato roadster will be a one-off creation, featuring an entirely hand-built aluminium body, 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and a bespoke cabin with elaborate leather stitching and embroidered ‘Z’ badging.

BMW never disclosed specifics of the Z4 Zagato coupe’s engine, although later reports revealed it was equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with roughly 300kW of power and teamed with a six-speed manual transmission.

More details of the new BMW Zagato concept will be revealed in the coming days.
