FPV GT RSPEC: ‘best car of its kind’

Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) has produced what it calls the best performance car ever made in Australia: the $76,990 FPV GT RSPEC.

The FPV GT RSPEC is powered by the same all-alloy supercharged 5.0-litre V8 as the previous GT cars, which produces 335 kW of power and 570 Nm of torque.  Apart from the local competition and Ford America’s own new 302 Mustang, the GT RSPEC, which was in development for over 18 months, was benchmarked against cars such as the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and even the Porsche Cayman.

FPV set out to improve its existing package by matching the might of the supercharged engine with better dynamics. Bernard Quinn, chief engineer of the project from Prodrive, which owns 51 per cent of FPV, said the aim was to create a more agile and responsive vehicle.

Quinn says the first obvious change was the addition of wider 275mm rear tyres. This simply required getting the right offset wheels with no serious suspension work necessary apart from alignment changes. It was also confirmed that the new wider wheels would still fit onto a standard FPV GT with the correct alignment.

From there, roll and body control were vastly improved through considerable changes to the suspension and mounts. For example, the FPV GT RSPEC has stiffer rear springs and a 19mm rear anti-roll bar. The engineers went so far as to stiffen the powertrain mounts, with the transmission mount now twice as stiff as the standard FPV GT.

The second focus was steering feel, which FPV says has been improved for a more responsive feel. There’s now more emphasis on ensuring that any steering input by the driver, regardless of magnitude, is met by a reaction from the car.

FPV engineers were aware of their cars’ desire to burn the rear tyres in a launch situation, which is why for the first time in the company’s history they have introduced a model with launch control. The idea was to match the torque output with the available traction.

In the manual transmission vehicles, launch control is engaged by leaving the traction control on, selecting first gear, depressing the clutch pedal and applying full throttle. The GT RSPEC’s computer will then hold engine revs at 3000rpm waiting for the driver to release the clutch pedal. The computer will then match engine torque output to traction in order to optimise the launch.

Automatic GT RSPEC models are even simpler, with the driver needing to press the brake pedal, engage sport mode and then flatten the accelerator and release the brake pedal at the same time.

While the strictly limited 350 GT RSPEC vehicles are being produced, FPV has ceased production of its regular GT car with plans to resume at a later date. FPV boss Bryan Mears said it was still to be determined if the ‘standard’ car will get the suspension and body changes of the GT RSPEC when it recommences production.

Of the 350 GT RSPEC cars, 175 will be in the hero silhouette black colour and the rest will be in a combination of kinetic blue, vixen and winter white (with the colour breakout determined by dealer orders).

Mears boasted that the GT RSPEC provides “terrific value for money” and that dealers have indicated that it’s priced in a good sweet spot. He boasted that it’s “the best car of its kind in Australia bar none, it’s a fantastic drive bar none”.

When pressed on FPV’s expectations, Mears confirmed that all cars have been wholesaled to dealers and that he expects all 350 sedans to find owners quickly. The company has no plans to make any more GT RSPEC regardless of demand.

The car launches in September with a TV commercial that features two FPV ambassadors: Allan Moffat and Will Davison.

What does xx mean? The same power as the GT? Don’t like the colour but like the fact they finally put some decent wheels on the car.

    • http://www.caradvice.com.au/ Alborz Fallah

Sorry, the draft version went live instead of the final version momentarily. Fixed now.

    • AD

Yea same power but I have read that this thing is capable of 4.5 second 0-100 times

After going for a ride in the current 335 GT, If these fatter tyres, launch control and retuned suspension can get the rear to hook up this sounds very achievable..

  • A-very-nice-gentleman

FPV why did you paint the rims red? Then you wonder why people call these ‘Bogans Cars’.

    • super_hans

They’ve borrowed the Mustang Boss 302 livery, looks great I think. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS comes with red wheels, I suppose it is a bogan car?

    • DanielD

Its not a bogan car, its a modern tv batmobile, in that black with red trim.

    • Paul

It wouldn’t matter what colour they are, it is still a bogan’s car, just a cashed up bogan

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YQLKLFNYP3UFBFAGOV2LNDSREA Robert Ryan

         Bogan’s drive Mazda RX7′s,Gemini’s etc.

        • Eskylid69

          and falcons and commodores

          • DanielD

And when  the aren’t available anymore, used BMW’s.

  • Tuc’s

funny comment made about traction control a first for the company. Auto only!!!! My FG XR6 turbo  manual ute has it and love it… What about the production of 75 Pursuit Utes to have matching R Spec items…… The pursuit is back!!!!

    • tuc tuc

Launch control is a first not traction control buddy

      • Zandit75

The XR6T has launch control in the manual models

        • symo

Yes, that is true, the FG does have LAUCH CONTROL in the XR6 Turbo

        • Devil666

*First for FPV, not Ford Aus.

  • Get Down for a BJ

I Just threw up!!! How desperate do you have to be to be noticed, class is not a word FPV cares to use

    • DanielD

It competes agains’t the HSV. Now your FPV can be specified with unlimited vulgarity, like your mates HSV.

FPV however do offer a more tame styling version of these cars for whom that race on styling is one they would prefer not to compete on.

Really they are just meeting the market.

      • Chris

Yeah, they are meeting a shrinking market, only ford fanboys and bogans drive these.

        • Ezz

Enthusiasts would appreciate this, no matter what your car preference is. Simple adjustments such as wider rear rubber make better use of what is a fantastic motor.

Too bad many posters on this site care more about social commentary and are so narrow minded their car choices are determined by some perceived social stigma. $70k+ is not alot of money for a car these days so I don’t see why you need to be cashed up to buy one.

    • Dave812008

      And your user name

  • Marko

Geez and you wonder why people arent buying Fords/FPV’s anymore…….

  • Michael Lock

“In the manual transmission vehicles, launch control is engaged by leaving the traction control on, selecting first gear, depressing the clutch pedal and applying full throttle.”
I think it will stall using this method, wouldn’t it be better to leave traction control on, DEPRESS CLUTCH, select first gear and then apply full throttle.

  • Jezza

Looks like the colour scheme was put together by some 1990′s commodore owners trying to make their machines like sIcK …… Maybe that’s when FPV ran out of money on the car because it sure doesn’t look like a Million Dollar paint job. And this is from a company a few years ago that before the Focus RS was brought in “refused to do imports” as I was told from FPV head office, it seems a bit underdone.

  • TomW

The red highlights are OK, but FFS lose the stripes down the side. Keep it subtle. The motor should be doing the talking.

  • Jase

If ya dont like the “Hero”  Black paint with red highlights/stripes then luckily there are White paint with black, Blue paint with black and Red paint with black highlights/stripe versions available as well.
IF i was to consider buying one it would be the more understated White paint with black highlights/stripes.
The “Hero” black and red looks abit too try hard/tacky BUT then i guess it will appeal to some people and also at last gives prospective GT buyers a few colour choices unlike FPV’s last few “limited edition” offerings (GT black, Cobra etc)

  • DanielD

One thing I did notice, is with all that money spent and the extra cost to purchase, they couldn’t put good quality leather and bolstering in the drivers seat. The seat base bolstering on the car in the interior shot, is already weakening and creasing badly on the door side, from people getting in and out of the car. A very, very common fault with FG Falcons that have leather. Really at this price point, that should have been fixed. An SS Commodore does better.

The rest of the car sounds like a good package, but I’d like to see how the new suspension setup affects durability before I would put money down. Will this car chew up bushes and suspension mounts like some past FG Falcons?

  • Gibbut

ss commdore leather better????  ss commodores interior seems more like plastic.

and the fords seats are far more comfortable. I for one, LOVE the red wheels, but hate the red mirrors and the underside of the back bumper. they do make the car look like it was modded by a p plate vr commdore driver.

show us a photo from a normal angle too… all the photos seem to be taken from a low stance… ill judge it finally once i see it in a better photo. :)

    • Igor

Yeah that’s my gripe with CA & they do it a lot..most of their car photos are from the un-natural viewpoint of a pygmy or dwarf.
They’re not designed for that & so not very flattering.
There’s a time & place for taking artsy photos but not on this site. We just wanna see the cars raw & natural as they’d be in the flesh & on the street.

Marko, people are buying Ford/FPV’s anymore for two reasons, 1 Ford marketing is woeful… actually, no, it’s non-existant, the second reason is that alot of Australians seem to be content with second best (Holden) I guess they believe that if enough people buy something that is second best, that will infact make it the best, unfortunately for them, that is incorrect.

    • Devil666

Your statement couldn’t be more general if you said all Holden drivers beat their wives. Jeeze!

As for you ‘second best’ claims, there are many areas the Holden is far more advanced than a Falcon. The ride, handling and steering for one, is something that I’ve never seen a reviewer award the Falcon over a Holden (since the VE).

That said, the engine and gearbox lineup is far superior in the Blue corner.

Interiors? Very subjective. Personally I hate them both.

I don’t think you could really call one thoroughly better overall, you buy the one that excels in the areas you prioritise.

      • Andrew M

        Devil,
Actually Ford does get awarded the ride and comfort and steering.

They get canned for body roll but it is summarised as being tuned as more for cruising rather than comfort.

The Ford has a far better suspension set up, they just dont tune their performance versions hard enough to impress the track judges.

This would be a real interesting comparison now in overall handling.
Ive always thouglt FPV should have offered this sort of suspension package as an option all along.

Also, these cars actually arent bought on performance merits, they are bought off of loyalty and image.
HSV has built up a very good brand presence and thats the bottom line why they sell more.
How many HSV owners do you know that would swing into both showroom and take the brochures home before deciding??

  • Eaglefry

Leather seats are far better in Ford and ,  as for color wheels do look good.   Color has been over done other wise.   Other than that good one Ford..

    • symo

Maybe but like all FPVs (and Falcons) the leather and interior will wear out in a matter of months. I laugh every time I see a ‘premium’ Falcon (or Commodore) and see the wrinkled leather on the drivers seat after less than 20,000kms. Looks like its 200,000kms old already. Not just one car, every one I have every seen from all different models in the last 20 years. It’s shocking.

Poor bastards who paid top dollar for that… my advice to those who have purchased such ‘premium’ Falcons, don’t look at a European or Japanese made vehicle of similar price, you may find what you are missing out on.

      • JooberJCW

I had an Aurion Zr6 with leather seats and I can say they are cheap and started cracking before 20K km’s. My parents new elantra’s leather feels more like rubber too. So its not just isolated to falcons.

When I had the GT I actually opted to go third party for my seats to be redone in leather. For 2k I had high quality italian nudo with replica stitching and embossing.

        • DanielD

After market trim is definitely the way to go, or if you are on a budget, get the less popular cloth trim for the GT. Like the XR cloth, it wears much better, than the cheap factory leather and you can upgrade to leather later if you like.

      • Andrew M

My Mazda has leather and its also wrinkled on the side bolster.
The mrs only weighs 55kgs too so its not like it gets a flogging

  • JooberJCW

They finally acknowledge the skinny tyres plaguing the FG FPV models, if they could consider the same width tyres as a HSV, the GT will easily smoke the comparable HSV GTS on the sprint.

  • The Observer

A Rspec in white with black colour trimmings would look sweet imo

  • PoisonEagle

Typical responses from all the haters. If this has been benchmarked against Cayman, M3, it should be an impressive bit of kit. The changes they’ve made underneath should eventually filter to regular GT. Its encouraging to see they are still doing R & D on it constantly.

  • BP

Rather be seen in a HSV than this, thanks.

    • Schah7

Does “BP” stand for  “BL..DY PATHETIC”?. rofl.!!

  • Info

Hey they have ditched the “racoon eyes” grey paint from around the head lights – that is a win.

  • Robj

Actually, I like the GT-E but a bit dear..will that price drop?

  • diesel

when will Australian car makers come into the year that we all currently live in? i.e. 2012, not 1982.

    • Jase

In the performance reasonably priced large car market where the HSV and the FPV are aimed at, they are up to speed. This “update” just brings FPV’s offerings abit closer inline to what there cross town HSV rivals have.

Looks are subjective but at least this tacky Black/red colour scheme has got people noticing and talking… even if it is not all good comments.
It reminds me of when the VE E2 series of HSV’s were released with there “out there” looks and front party lights etc. That car sure got the Aussie performance buyers talking much the same as this FPV is now doing.

Simple thing is if ya dont like it, NO ONE is holding a gun to your head and making you buy it. You can still go ahead and buy a large euro performance model with there highly inflated purchase and option prices (for the australian market)

    • Schah7

Know what ya mean “diesel” HSV are still there[1982] with there[ push-rod ohv 2 valve] v8 sh….. engines.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karl-Sass/100000921334936 Karl Sass

Most of those changes should be standard FPV kit.

  • Christes82

Remind me what happed to the dinosours agian? Oh yeah thats right, they became extinct. Good bye falcon and good bye FPV.

    • Schah7

Don’t cry TOO much, Christes82, cause FPR  produce a far better car that HSV will .!
Sorry, it must be just getting to ya hu.!

  • Bakert207

You will never please everyone, but i am looking forward to the next model, 450kw that should be the one to buy

  • Guest

I almost spit out my morning latte when I read that the FPV GT RSPEC which looks absolutely hideous in black with red sticker stripes/red body parts & awful red coloured wheels was being benchmarked against the BMW M3, MB C63 AMG & Porsche Cayman (- a coupe?). I questioned the FPV style committee in coming up with such abominations – the whole thing reeks of very bad taste! It’s a blatant rip-off of the Porsche GT3 colour scheme. Where it looks cool on the Porsche – it looks absolutely ridiculous on a sedan body like the Falcon. The red coloured wheels are simply too ugly (read: cheapo) for a near $80K car. Absolute turn-off!

    • Heathmacfarlan

I’d own this car those pics don’t do this car justice I went in to my FPV dealer yesterday and seen it in the flesh at 1st I was put off by the red wheels but the more I went over the car and looked at it from different angels the more it grew on me I love the look but still unsure on the rims but you can change them I’d say this has to be the best GT that FPV has put together but I still wouldn’t trade my 2005 mk2 GT-P in on one

  • sf

The GT RSPEC is the most unsophisticated example of a car I have ever seen i can tell what sort of drivers will purchase this before it even arrives on the showroom floor. The red accents are way too much, a Nissan GTR is alot quicker and has better specifications for example AWD, less fuel consumption, better looking etc. and it doesnt try half as hard to look so audacious.

  • Awas351

It’s a car that punches you in the face then goes ” hey dickhead , check this out”

  • Awas351

The other thing is you don’t have to get all the stickers ect it comes as an option and I’m sure you could get different colour rims
