Here’s proof Mercedes is working hard on the next generation CLK. Bigger and yet a bit more elegant than the outgoing model, the new CLK (and CLK convertible likewise) will be based on the C-class saloon.

It goes without saying, however, that refinement will be done to the chassis to meet expectations of the somewhat more ambitious coupé-drivers. Visible for the first time in these exclusive shots is the uncovered overall shape of the new model which looks similar to the new E-class than to the current C.

Rumours therefore suggest the car will be called the E-class coupé and will loose its traditional name CLK. But, alas, they are only rumours.

Engines, on the other hand, will come from the C-class line-up and will include a V8 for a CLK 500.

We expect the car to arrive in European dealerships in summer 2009 with the soft-top following just a few months later.

I know Caradvice isn’t the originator of the rumours that it will be called an E-class coupe rather than a CLK, but I’ve heard it so many times I thought it was time to comment. The first generation CLK had the same frontal design as its E-class contemporary, but was based on the C-class – just like the next generation. Just because it wears an E-class face doesn’t mean it will be called an E-class coupe!

i hate how in the rear window it seems to have a chunk taken out of it? almost as if merc wanted the long window design, but put a plastic piece there for vertical rear window operation perhaps? hmmm…

either way, besides that one small ‘defect’ i like it. and i hope they keep it CLK!

that small part of the window that is covered up will meant hat the window can roll down there
