Hyundai has sold its one millionth Australian new vehicle at a Western Australian dealership, 26 years after the same Perth-based dealership sold Hyundai’s very first Australian new car.

The Hyundai ix35, from John Hughes in Perth, marked the one million milestone following the Korean brand hitting 500,000 new car sales eight years ago.

“We’re delighted that that the millionth new Hyundai was sold in the same city where it all began back in 1986,” said Hyundai marketing director Oliver Mann.

Hyundai’s Australian sales peaked in 2011 with a record 87,008 units sold, making up 8.6 per cent of market share. With sales up 5.4 per cent so far this year, its on track for another record year in 2012.

That percentage market share was matched in last month’s June sales figures with 9672 vehicles sold, enough to see it finish the month in third position overall behind Holden (10,632) and Toyota (21,649).

Hyundai i30 - Front and Back

To date, Hyundai’s positive year sees five of its cars in the top 50 best-selling cars in Australia with the Hyundai i30 (14,000), Hyundai ix35 (5797), Hyundai i20 (5479), Hyundai Elantra (4700) and Hyundai Accent (4066) all making the cut.

Toyota recently reached a milestone of its own, producing its 200 millionth car.

  • Holden Bogan

    One million suckers

    • Sumpguard

My father did 14 years of absolute fault free motoring in his elantra. Nothing more than two replacement batteries.

          What a sucker he is!

      • matt

is that the elantra where you couldn’t put it in reverse with the handbrake on (manual) lol

        • Hyundai_lover

XD Elantra, that was only if the handbrake was quarter up, not fully up..

    • Perky

says the guy driving a barina

  • Piston Broke

How many still are on the road?

  • Showtime

It is very deserving of Hyundai too. Over the last 5 years they have been striving and achieving to do better. I couldn’t be happier with our new Hyundai Accent too :)

    • Alex

Last 5 years? No I’d say last 12 years… Starting with their last gen Sonata (5 Stars ncap safety rating among other achievements)

  • Norm

Wow – the iX35 is a seriously rotten piece of design. Were the lights out when they drew that thing? Blimey.

    • Norm-Not

its better than your rotten thinking and language. Did you look at ix35 when the lights were out?

      • Norm

        Nope. Broad daylight. It stinks.

        • Gibbut

well at least one person hates it, plenty seem to love it, theres stacks on the road!

  • TG

What? No mention of Alan Bond in your article, CA? :D

This is only the beginning. Hyundai has already taken over Honda’s crown is now after Toyota.  Hyundai will do to Toyota what Samsung & LG did to Sony and Panasonic in electronics.  Hyundai is actually trying to do the right things, Toyota is purely in defensive mode = beginning of the end. The 2 most car brands setting the pace today are VW and Hyundai. The new i30 is an absolute gem to drive and the attention to detail at every point is very pleasing.  This is a car company that cares about it’s future far beyond what Japanese brands are doing.  Which Japanese hatch could possibly better than an i30 at the moment? Mazda 3 = unrefined, New Corolla = cheap look, Honda Civic = Out of date, cheaply made, Impreza = Ugly as and CVT, Nissan…next, Mitsu = nothing. In this current market (and looks like after new Corolla), i30 & Golf are the only real contenders for leading edge design and quality (forget Ford Focus for long-term quality)

    • Phil

Yes, VW should indeed watch out – it’s probably the next target on Hyundai’s list. The i30 already trumps the Golf in design and the company’s making huge strides in terms of driving dynamics.

    • Wilhelm

You forgot the Focus and upcoming Astra.

    • M.

Honda Civic cheaply made? The civic feels FAR from cheaply made, arguably the best build quality in it’s class. The new hatch has a particularly premium fit and finish in the cabin. Quality interiors is still something Hyundai certainly haven’t perfected. They’ve got to cut costs somewhere, after all. Also their design is very much a personal preference, and in my opinion very bold and likely to date quickly.

      • Henryz_44

Have you been in the new i30? Quality is up with some vw’s and looks quite nice. I do agree that the civic is nice inside though!

      • Galaxy

I test drove the Jap built sedan back in April, and had very thin door linings and trim, not to mention 2 separate dash rattles. Not a good start for Honda 9th gen Civic.

      • Phunken

Honda is going down in their quality and design, even the Honda CEO apologised to the American months after the release of the latest Civic due to complaint from the yank. They are quickly re assessing their update.

        • Gibbut

          that was the last civic

    • Andrew M

      Mazda 3 unrefined??
Well 4000 buyers per month must not have a clue then.

Mazda 3 leads the way for quality and refinement and IMO is the class where the sales leader deserves it.

The new Focus has always been a good package as far as dynamics and drivetrain go, but now its looks, equipment and quality has really lifted.
I know some of the South African Focus got a bad name, but dont forget the new model is out of Germany and Thailand now

      • Galaxy

Read all reviews about Mazda 3, and all complaints are about poor NVH. Wouldn’t touch a Ford, as I usually like to keep my cars more than 3 years and don’t like being on 1st name terms with my mechanic

        • Andrew M

Well if Mazda 3 gets complaints about dynamics I’d hate to see what reviews other cars are getting.

You need to stop fishing reviews out of the Hyundai Weekly.

Regarding Ford Quality, or your understanding that its lacking somewhere, Did you not read me say the South African plant has been ditched in Favour of Germany and Thailand with the new model??

Ive had Fords and Mazdas longer than 3 years old, when they get serviced I never get nasty surprises.

On the flip side I found the Hyundai I previously owned to be a spark plug chewing oil burner.
Yes it was reliable as such, but they seem to generally wear quicker.
Put the Missus in a Mazda after that and I actually like driving her car now. We did look at the new hyundais but they still werent all that

        • Gibbut

ba 2 falcon in our driveway 280 thousand kays and the only thing thats gone wrong was the ignition barrel. fixed that myself.

if i wound the speedo back to 100 thou, youd beleive it.  Brilliant car!

          • Andrew M

And the other side to the story is all cars need things replaced at some point when they get old, A Falcon would have to be one of the cheapest vehicles to service or repair and parts are readily available.

Most serious thing Ive had go wrong on a Falcon was a pulley broke and the belt was rubbing on the metal hub.

I limped it down to the local Ford dealership only a couple of minutes away, they had one in stock, the Foreman did it straight away. Cause I drove it down against their advice I also wore the drive belt (wasnt waiting 2 hrs for RACQ). They also replaced the belt as a precaution and I got out of it for under $250.

Price a drive belt, Pulley and labour For a Honda, Or a Subaru, Or even a Hyundai

      • Gibbut

most mazda buyers are young p plate girls who care not for refinement, just if they like the look of a car.

so many girls buy the 2 and the 3 because they love the look.

stuffs me why, they are pig ugly!

    • Universe

The general consensus among motoring journos, particularly in Europe, is that the Focus is the current class leader.

      • Phunken

Yes but journo don’t have to buy and pay for their car, and they don’t have to pay for service and upkeep. Good driving dynamics with fragile build quality is not really practical.

  • Sam

I would buy an i35 tomorrow….if I enjoyed driving ugly cars.

    • Phunken

      Try the Ssangyong

  • Tony

me smell bullsh*t,,,  just a little too cute that the dealership that sold the first also sold the millionth.

But, having said that the current Hyundai range is obviously what the market wants – and I have no doubt, sooner rather than later, will challenge toyota in (passenger) sales.

  • Alex

This is not the Hyundai from a decade ago.

    • Andrew M

Thats good, because the Hyundai from half a decade ago was 2 decades behind the rest
