Jaguar C-X75: hybrid supercar details revealed
A number of details of the Jaguar C-X75 have been revealed as development work continues on the highly anticipated green performance machine.
UK's Car Magazine reports the Jaguar C-X75 will be powered by a bespoke, Jaguar-built, 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor combination co-developed by the Williams Formula One team, which will be supported by a second electric motor to develop over 368kW (500bhp).
The small-capacity petrol engine will benefit from both turbocharging and supercharging as well as direct and port-fed fuel injection. The direct injection will cover the low-to-mid rev range, with a focus on fuel efficiency, while the port-fed system will supply more fuel at higher revs, which are said to reach an astronomical 10,000rpm.
A multi-powered four-wheel-drive system will team with a transverse seven-speed automated manual transmission - a dual-clutch gearbox was deemed too big and heavy - to help deliver acceleration figures of 0-100km/h in less than three seconds.
While the rear wheels will be driven by the combined petrol/electric hybrid powerplant – with electric-only drive possible – the front wheels will be powered by an always-engaged electric motor. The result will see the plug-in hybrid Jaguar achieve CO2 emissions of just 99 grams per kilometre and a pure EV range of 60km.
The production C-X75’s set-up differs from that seen in the original concept car that debuted at the 2010 Paris motor show, with the jet turbine generators deleted altogether. Stylistically though, similarities between concept and production car will be a definite.
A bonded carbon chassis, carbon rear subframe and mostly carbon body panels will also make the C-X75 Jaguar’s first carbon car.
With development progressing from lab tests to working prototypes, a final production date should be announced by early next year.
With production limited to 200 units, the Jaguar C-X75 will join the Porsche 918 Spyder, Ferrari Enzo replacement and McLaren F1 successor in being part of the next genuine supercar revolution in employing hybrid technology for ultimate performance when they start reaching roads around the world in 2013/14.
