MG Roadster to return as SUV: report

A new MG Roadster based on the MG Icon concept, first seen at the 2012 Beijing motor show in April, is reportedly set to make a comeback in the form of a convertible compact SUV.

Auto Express reports that MG is hopeful the new soft-top crossover can appeal to a new wave of enthusiasts with its modern interpretation of the brand's past sports cars like the MGB.

The publication says there are strong suggestions both the MG Icon and Roadster will be produced side-by-side before entering the compact crossover market in China, the US, UK and Europe in 2015, priced around the £14,000 ($21,000) mark.

That market is currently the territory of the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet and Nissan Juke, the latter of which is likely to arrive on Australian shores in 2013. The Juke, which shares its platform with the recently released electric Nissan Leaf and upcoming Nissan Pulsar, provides buyers with the option of both front- and all-wheel drive models.

MG has been managed by the Chinese Government-owned Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) since 2007, after taking control of the British name from Nanjing Automobile Corporation, the group who initially bought MG Rover in 2005.

The original MG MGB Roadster was launched in 1962 as two-seater rear-wheel-drive sports car.
