Porsche 918 Spyder: hybrid supercar gets track pack
The Porsche 918 Spyder, Porsche's plug-in hybrid supercar due in 2013, will be available with a racing-inspired track pack option for owners who feel the standard car just won't cut it.
Autocar reports the track pack will be all about shedding more weight out of the carbonfibre-reinforced polymer (CRP)-monocoqued Porsche 918 Spyder by means of a stripped-out interior and the option of no paint.
With the target weight of the standard multi-motored Porsche being less than 1700kg, the track pack is expected to result in a further 30kg reduction in vehicle mass.
The 918 Spyder is powered by a 425kW-plus mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8 engine, a 90kW hybrid module tied to the rear axle and an 80kW electric motor linked to the front axle all combining for a total power output above 574kW. Peak torque is expected to surpass 750Nm helping the 'green' supercar charge to 100km/h from standstill in less than 3.0 seconds and onto a top speed of more than 325km/h - all with the ability to return fuel consumption figures of 3.0 litres per 100km.
Autocar says approximately 20 per cent of all 918 customers - only 918 cars are to be produced - are expected to go with the track pack option, which will also come at an additional cost.
With production beginning in September next year and first deliveries arriving shortly thereafter, the circa-$1.5 million left-hand-drive-only Bahnstormer will never see Australian streets (not legally anyway).
The German supercar is one of several upcoming new-wave performance cars taking advantage of hybrid technologies including the Ferrari Enzo replacement and McLaren F1 successor.
