Toyota Corolla: small wagon to make comeback

CarAdvice's spy photographers have captured the Toyota Corolla wagon undergoing hot-weather testing in southern Europe, confirming the most practical version of the world's most popular small car is about to make a global comeback.

A staple since the first-generation Corolla launched in the late 1960s, the wagon body style disappeared from most international markets with the introduction of the current model in 2006 (Japan and New Zealand are among the few markets to offer the 10th-generation Corolla wagon).

The 11th-generation Toyota Corolla wagon is expected to be the third body style to join the new range, following the launch of the new hatch at the 2012 Paris motor show in September and the introduction of the sedan around 12 months later. Our spy photographers believe the Corolla wagon could be revealed at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show next September before hitting the market in 2014.

Although recent generations of the Corolla wagon have had different styling to the hatch, the new estate will bear a much greater resemblance to its five-door sibling.

The spy images reveal a front-end design seemingly identical to the leaked Corolla hatch images CarAdvice posted in May. The fresh styling introduces a V-shaped grille with sharper headlights and a sportier front bumper with a larger lower air intake.

An updated version of the existing 1.8-litre petrol engine is expected to bring new levels of performance and fuel economy to the 11th-generation Corolla, teaming with either a six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). For the first time, the new Corolla will also be available with the option of a BMW-sourced diesel engine.

The all-new Toyota Corolla hatch goes on sale in Australia in the final quarter of this year following its debut at the 2012 Australian international motor show in Sydney in October. There is no word at this stage if the wagon variant will be reintroduced to our market to take on the likes of the Holden Cruze wagon and the Volkswagen Golf wagon.
