Opel Australia reveals dealer network

Opel has announced it will have a network of 17 dedicated showrooms when the brand officially launches in September.

The European General Motors brand says most of the dealerships are being specially built for the launch and that only two of them also own a franchise for sister brand Holden.

The Opel showrooms will include every Australian state capital city.

“Our [franchise] partners include some of the nation’s most successful and well regarded dealers,” said Opel Australia boss Bill Mott. “Their significant investment in unique, stand-alone Opel facilities is a testament to the potential they ascribe to the brand in Australia.”

Opel’s vehicle range will initially comprise the Corsa city car (above), Astra hatchback and Insignia medium car. The line-up will be bolstered with variants of the Astra such as the GTC three-door and is expected to be joined by the Astra OPC hot-hatch and Mokka baby SUV.

Pricing and specifications won’t be announced for the Opel models until early August but the brand is expected to pitch itself as a semi-premium brand like Volkswagen, with the Corsa, Astra and Insignia carrying some form of premium over their Holden equivalents – the Barina, Cruze and forthcoming Malibu respectively.

The Astra was a popular car in Australia under the Holden badge and is predicted by Opel to be easily its volume model in the new range.

Opel has said it is targeting about 15,000 sales a year in Australia by 2015.

The dealer groups who will have both Holden and Opel showrooms are AP Eager’s and Alto.

Well they seem to have quite a good dealer network being set up then, now lets see how well they run the operation. I think they might do a good job. Dealers are understanding more and more these days that buyers won’t stand being treated like crap and ignored, so I think a completely new brand may treat their customers well simply because they’re starting from nothing. I just hope they don’t over price things; a couple of thousand can be crucial.

Just what we need in Oz, ANOTHER brand…..

Just what we need in Oz, ANOTHER brand…..

    • Junovidor

Well, it’s another good brand so it should be welcomed. All chinese brands have yet to work out their way up for another 20 years like Hyundai did to get to the quality and innovation level that its cars can proudly show today.
I’m just waiting until next September to make up my mind between the new Honda Civic and the new Opel Astra. Originally from Europe, I’ve been driving for 25 years in Australia mostly great Japanese cars  but I never had a Honda nor an Opel. It’s gonna be a hard and exciting decision for me but I reckon it’s worth the waiting.

      • Junovidor

I meant the Honda Civic Hatch of course (not the sedan) which is manufactured in the UK and was officialy launched yesterday in Ozland.

        • FanBoi

Have some class and don’t buy the cheap Honda Civic (Hatch, Made in UK), buy a real Euro, even Skoda is much better then Honda.

Do you really think the Civic hatch (made in UK) is any good?? Did you not read the reviews??

Even better, get Europe’s most popular car, de Golf.

    • O123

      more brands mean more competition

  • MisterZed

What the?  John Blair Honda is located on the corner of Williams Rd and High St.  Are they going to sell Opels and Hondas in the same dealership?  Should be interesting…

    • FanBoi

a very small dealership even for Hondas, let alone Opel + Honda.

      //

      • MisterZed

It just goes to show you that John Blair are obviously hurting bad from the huge drop in Honda sales, so they want a second car brand to sell.

    • F1MotoGP

JB Honda one side is new car other side of the road is used cars.

    • Igomi Watabi

in Geelong they’re being sold by the Ford dealer. Ford selling Astras!

  • Eurochuro

Interesting to see that Motorline Group will be selling Opels next to BMW’s and Mini’s. Don’t know where they will have the space though.

    • Legnab

Same in adelaide , next door to bmw/mini .

    • Mad Max

And Clycevale in Berwick own Berwick Nissan and KIA + Dandenong Nissan and KIA so we have a real mix in that dealership group.

  • TG

What, no AHG? Awwwww…. I shed a few tears.

  • nugsdad

Gold Coast will be full of Japanese trying to buy Opals

  • dsuhiti

Impressive seeing them located next to BMW, Mini, Merc at alot of these locations.

    • JooberJCW

Its a strategic location i believe. Alot of people who buy merc bmw etc go into finance, they think they can afford it and get shellshocked when the finance guy shows repayments. They walk out realising these cars are beyong their means and see the opel dealership no other competitors around and just walk in ready for a salesperson to pounce and make a sale!

      Just a thought.

  • Mr Plow

If they overprice their cars like Skoda do here then they will have about as much “success” and be lucky to sell 2000 cars a year. They’ve got to be very competitive on pricing.

    • dsuhiti

Their styling alone will cement them as decently successful. Skoda doesnt have the looks or a good price point. Also Astra is a very recognizable name in Aus.

    • Pirate Post Office

You are right on Skoda… A well equipped Octavia wagon cost about the same as a Passat!

No dealers up here in Darwin… kind of expected, but a shame…

  • Pirate Post Office

I love the style.., really suspicious of reliability and ownership costs based on past bad experiences. Not for me unless Opel offer a 5 year warranty.

  • Opelman

I welcome Opel to Oz. I’m looking forward to walking into a dealership and putting down my deposit for a GTC. Good to have a quality brand come to Australia, rather than the crap coming from China. I welcome competition, as this drives brands to fight for your dollar, in effect, giving the consumer a good value product. Opel should do well with offering competitive priced cars with generous kit levels to combat the likes of VW, Skoda, Citroen etc

  • Mattyman

Finally we get some quality product from the general!

    • Legnab

Pretty obvious they are distancing themselves from the Daewoo/GM pack , no piont in being down market discounters selling junksters .

  • Al

It’s not another brand, LOL. It’s just a different badge for the same crappy Holdens/Vauxhalls. Opel has the worst image of all European car manufacturers IN EUROPE. Go to Europe and ask the people, if you don’t believe me. Hence that’s why General Motors has to sell the same garbage under 3 different names because they could never build an international reputation for that garbage.

  • Dario

Any dealers near Yarrawonga Vic?  Who will service country vehicles?

    • MisterZed

You can get it serviced anywhere.

      • Justintime

If i was buying a new car i would only service at the authorised dealer. I would never use the likes of autotune after my experiences. I live near albury and would expect to have a local dealer before i would even consider buying an opel. If opel is serious about australia they need a country dealer network sooner rather than later. Dealerships in Major regional centres like albury are a must for any credible car brand.

And please dont suggest to use the holden dealer for my servicing.

  • Long Opel fan

Not another brand – just getting rid of the Holden brand that is really Isuzu, Chevrolet and Opel.

I have an Astra 1.9 diesel (twin cam) 6 speed manual, it has done 150k and is an excellent car,

  • diesel delight

The opel Astra is a better car than the VW Golf.
I had a golf dsg diesel and was not happy with either south yarra VW  or the car.
Traded it on above Astra diesel.

  • rocky

I was disappointed when Holden dropped the Astra for the lesser Cruze.
Opel is here with new Astras, that’s really good news, I’m happy,
