Light cars: May sales overview

Another strong sales month by the Toyota Yaris has seen it overtake the Mazda2 to become the top-selling city car in Australia so far for 2012.

The Yaris surged to 1826 sales, its best monthly result since December 2010, helping it finish 503 units clear of the second-ranked Mazda2 on 1323.

The strong May result sees the Yaris take a 144-vehicle lead over the compact Mazda after the first five months of this year in a tightly fought battle resembling that between the Mazda3 and the Toyota Corolla. Yaris sales are up 17.6 per cent this year, while the Mazda2 is up 10.6 per cent.

The Suzuki Swift (1060) hit the podium narrowly ahead of the Holden Barina (1000) in May, while the Honda Jazz completed the top five, backing up from a strong April. While Barina sales have increased 113 per cent this year, the manual-only Barina Spark has plummeted 1261 units to just 742.

The Hyundai Accent and i20 are sharing the load in the light-segment as they aim to fill the void created by the discontinued Getz. The two have combined for 7864 sales so far this year, which together puts them 187 sales ahead of the Yaris.

Of those vehicles outside the top 10, a total of 444 Volkswagen Polo hatchbacks found homes in May, taking it to 1952 for the year, while the Suzuki Alto trails close behind on 1619.
