Porsche 911 Club Coupe: limited edition marks 60 years

The limited edition Porsche 911 Club Coupe has been used to launch the '60 Years of Porsche Clubs' exhibition at the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, Germany, marking the 1952 founding of the first ever Porsche Club.

Only 13 of the custom-built Brewster Green 911 Club Coupes will be made, giving a nod to the original 13 Porsche Club members from its inaugural year. Making things even more exclusive, only twelve will actually be available as Porsche itself will retain one vehicle on behalf of Porsche Club World.

Based on the Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe, the 911 Club Coupe is powered by a 3.8-litre six-cylinder boxer engine with direct injection tweaked with the Carrera S Powerkit to see 316kW at 7,500rpm (up 22kW compared to the 911 Carrera S) and a matching 440Nm of torque peaking 150rpm higher.

The Powerkit includes modified cylinder heads and camshafts, centre radiator, newly developed variable resonance-type intake system, sports exhaust with two dual tailpipes, optimised engine management and Porsche's Sport Chrono Package with dynamic engine mounts. The combination is enough to help the 911 Club Coupe bring up three figures from a standstill in 4.0 seconds using Porsche's dual-clutch Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and Sport Plus mode. Porsche is also offering its seven-speed manual gearbox as an option.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are both standard as are the Brewster Green-trimmed 20-inch Sport Techno wheels (9x20 front, 11.5x20 rear). For the more serious club member, a fire extinguisher is also an option.

The car is distinguishable by its decorative ‘911 Club Coupe’ lettering on the doors, ala 911 Carrera GTS and Carrera 4 GTS, distinctive front spoiler and "duck tail" rear spoiler, plus a new titanium-coloured engine cover and carbonfibre inserts.

Inside the classic styling cues continue with natural leather in Espresso with Luxor Beige stitching, and brushed aluminium on the switch panel trim and PDK gear selector. A Bose audio system and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) ensure modern technology is still felt.

Exclusively for the 911 Club Coupe, the brushed aluminium switch panel trim strip is fitted with a personalised laser-engraved "911 Club Coupe – personally built for" with the name of the purchaser to be added. Further unique highlights are door entry guards finished in Brewster Green that feature an illuminated brushed stainless steel inlay with a '911 Club Coupe' inscription that lights up to match the light atmosphere of the interior and also features a '60 Years of Porsche Clubs' anniversary logo and a '911 Club Coupe' embossed leather key pouch in matching Espresso with Luxor Beige stitching.

The buying process to land yourself one of the twelve limited edition cars is different to say the least, with solely Porsche Club members able to register between May 26 and July 16, 2012, after which time the twelve “winners” will be determined by means of an official draw before they are allowed to part with the 142,831 euro ($181,967) base price.

Porsche Australia is investigating the possibility of a right-hand drive variant making its way to Australia, however a left-hand drive version could potentially be bought buy an Aussie specifically for track use only.

The first Porsche Club, Westfalischer Porsche Club Hohensyburg, was established on May 26, 1952, just four years after the first Porsche was built in 1948. There are now 640 official Porsche Clubs in 75 countries around the world with a total of approximately 181,000 members.

The '60 Years of Porsche Clubs' exhibition at the Porsche Museum runs until August 26, 2012.
