Smart eScooter to electrify streets in 2014

The Smart eScooter, first seen at the 2010 Paris motor show, will become a reality when it is launched in 2014.

Mercedes-Benz Cars executive vice president of sales and marketing Dr Joachim Schmidt confirmed overnight that "the decision in favour of the escooter has been made", moving Smart a step closer to its goal of implementing a comprehensive concept for future urban mobility.

Smart's electric line-up is slowly but surely coming together with the Smart Fortwo electric drive coupe and convertible launching this year and deliveries of the first eBikes (pictured top) just begining.

The two-wheeled Smart eScooter packs a 4kW punch through its rear-wheel-mounted direct hub drive motor and 48-volt lithium-ion battery. It has a range of 100km and a top speed of 45km/h, both more than adequate for urban travels. The eScooter uses a smartphone interface that acts as an instrument 'dashboard' and doubles as an anti-theft device as the vehicle will not switch on until the phone is connected.

Being a Daimler product, safety is also not neglected with the eScooter scoring both front and rear anti-lock brakes, a handlebar-mounted airbag and Blind Spot Assist.

Pricing information and availability will be released closer to its launch.
