I miss my '90 model 1.6. :-(
Wasn't the fastest thing on four wheels, but that didn't matter. Just a hell of a good, pure drive. No ABS No ESP No Traction Control No Air Cond & No room. Just the essentials.

Mmmm...tempting. Having owned a 2002 NB model and later, a 2005 SP (not the mazda SE but the Alan Horsley SP), I really found them to be very good handling cars. I often found myself taking the "long" route to somewhere as long as it had a few curves in it.

The turbo in the SP did overwhelm the car a little in the corners. But for sheer pleasure in auditory stimuli, you cannot go past the turbo. The whooss, pops, whines and the wind when driving a turbo Mx5 with the top down....priceless.

lol, that's funny Jimbo...

i got an 84' Meteor, and we also name our cars. the day i got it, me and my sister sat infront of it and thought for ages of what we could name it. Dad suggested 'Doris' because that was the name of the previous and only owner.

well, we didn't like it, so we went with 'Bernie' coz it looks like an old mans car and it's short for Bernard.

i've only had the thing for 8months but i absolutely love it! 24years old and only done 144,000km =].

good review guys, considering Jazz, 2, or Fiesta next February...

Golfschwein, I apologise and I stand corrected. I googled Datsun 120Y and I would agree with your assessment. What a majestic beast it was. If only the MX5 could emulate some of its awesomeness it would not put me to sleep.
And yes I know I know when I drive a MX5 I will change my mind but for now it's Camryness kills it for me.

Thanks DanMan, I knew there would be a reason. Very clever of car companies to play on peoples tendencies to humanise their cars.
I know I had a 1982 Laser that only worked when it wanted to and I use to talk to it all the time with words of encouragement, pleading with it and even threatening it at times.
I swear this happened. One hot summers day in a car park I admired a new Focus and the Laser stalled would not start. I eventually in my delirium from the heat apologised for admiring the other car and hey presto the laser sprung to life.
Am I delusional? Quite likely! But to this day I still name every car I own.

Mx5's have always been a favorite of mine.. had a 2004 SE in Titanium which was awesome. So pure. Every drive put a smile on my face. Driving at it's purest.
Not many cars have stayed relenvent for 20 years and remained true to the first concept.. Love it.

The researchers, from the University of Toronto and the University of Chicago, find that people are more likely to attribute human qualities or traits to inanimate objects if the product fits with their expectations of relevant human qualities -- and are also more likely to positively evaluate an anthropomorphized item.

"We sometimes see cars as loyal companions going so far as to name them. We argue with, cajole, and scold malfunctioning computers and engines," explain Pankaj Aggarwal (University of Toronto) and Ann L. McGill (University of Chicago). "We find that if the product has a feature that is typically associated with a human prototype, then people are more likely to humanize the product, and also evaluate it more positively."

So if a car is 'happy' you will like it more..
