Audi A1 Sportback Concept

October 2, 2008 by Matt Brogan

Audi is set to unveil a five door, four seater version of the A1 at the Paris Motor Show tomorrow, this time a Sportback variant.

Powering the A1 Sportback is a hybrid system combining a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine (which produces 110kW) and an electric motor producing an addition 20kW (and 150Nm of torque) available under acceleration. Drive is delivered to the front wheels via Audi’s S-Tronic dual clutch transmission.

Fitted with ESP and differential lock, the front wheel set up is said to promote dynamism, efficiency and motoring pleasure – all we know is it looks pretty impressive and with the whole vehicle able to run solely on electric power for up to 100km, it should be pretty light on the wallet come fill up time too.

Also featuring automatic stop/start facility and energy regeneration, A1 Sportback manages a claimed 0-100 time of 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 200km/h. Fuel consumption is 3.9 litres per 100km.

We’ll be bringing you live coverage of the Paris Motor Show the moment the doors swing open – so stay tuned for more.

    Awesome looker! Take that Mini!

  5. greenroom says:

Very sweet. It nearly looks reptilian, sort of like a king cobra. Well done. See Subaru…. it can be done.

  6. DanMan says:

    Looks like ‘IRONMAN’s helmet…
Shame it’s only a concept. Lose most of that tinsel for the production version, costs, costs, costs…

  7. Jimbo says:

Very cool. Much better than a Prius!

  8. Frontman says:

Any wonder this company is going strength to strength. Style and usability. As for loosing tomuch by the time it hits the graound, they do have a good rep for being very close. (Read TT and S5)

  9. Alex says:

Actually, I think you can hold high hopes for this one. Audi has a very good history of their production cars looking very close to the concepts. I doubt the bodywork will really change at all, maybe just the details. I love the headlights, but I dont like the front bumper. Id get used to it though. I would also find this more desirable than a mini and its a small car that actually looks kind of masculine.

  10. fasthonda says:

Is the engine supercharged and turbo charged as well?

  11. topdog says:

    wow looks hot

  12. Neo Utopia says:

I have a conspiracy theory, Audi engineers and designers use a time machine to do their engineering and designing ten years in the future, then return back to present day to build the concepts.

Great looks, brand kudos, highly efficient, exceptional quality, functional and fun to drive, a hybrid from any other brand now seems irrelevant to me!
