BMW low-emission London Olympic Games fleet unveiled

BMW incorporated the electric and hybrid vehicles into its fleet to meet the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games' (LOCOG) required average vehicle emission target of less than 120 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

While average vehicle emissions in the UK stands at 138g/km, BMW exceeded expectations with a fleet that averages 116g/km.

LOCOG says 80 per cent of the BMW London Games fleet will meet Euro 6 emission standards - two years before they become mandatory. And when the electric cars require charging, London's new charging infrastructure made up of 120 high-speed charge points installed in five key locations – such as at ExCeL London where boxing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling, fencing, table tennis and weightlifting will all take place – will be showcased to the world.

BMW's Olympic fleet consists of: 160 1-Series ActiveE coupes, 40 Mini E hatches, 40 5-Series ActiveHybrids, 1550 320d EfficientDynamics, 700 520d Efficient Dynamics, 17 X3 xDrive 20d SUVs, 10 X5 xDrive 30d SUVs, 200 Mini Countryman Cooper Ds, 25 R1200 RT motorbikes and 400 BMW Streetcruiser bicycles. The remaining numbers will be filled out with Citroen MPVs, to far less fanfare, as the BMW range doesn't include that type of vehicle.

The fleet will be used for everything from ferrying around athletes, media, judges, Games officials and staff, medical officers, and technical delegates to pulling boats out of the water at the Weymouth and Portland sailing venues.

The 2012 London Olympic Games open on July 27 and conclude August 12.
