Nissan Juke R: GT-R-powered SUV gets production go

The Nissan Juke R, a crossover vehicle powered by the engine from the GT-R supercar, will go into limited production.

The Juke R was originally conceived as a madcap idea by a small band of Nissan engineers, but Nissan has confirmed it will build a limited run in response to public reaction to the vehicle.

Nissan says it has already received three orders, including two for “a high profile and well respected” customer in Dubai, where the Juke R made its debut in January. Vehicles will be made on a built-to-order basis.

CarAdvice drove the Nissan Juke R earlier this year and suggested a small production run was likely despite the company’s denials.

Juke R prototypes used hardware from the 2010 Nissan GT-R but production versions will be based on the 2012 version of the Japanese supercar.

The result is a power output of 407kW from the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 found in the GT-R, with a top speed of close to 260km/h. The Nissan Juke R also borrows the GT-R’s all-wheel-drive underpinnings.

Nissan’s marketing product manager for the Juke, Gareth Dunsmore, says the company had no choice but to build the car after the response to the concept.

“The Juke-R was originally intended as a one-off concept to marry two of Nissan’s most innovative models,” says Dunsmore, “but the reaction we had to the car in Dubai was amazing – people were making offers for the original on the street

“With such a strong reaction, and with three genuine offers on the table, we decided we had to make the car a reality. We can’t let down enthusiasts who are this keen to add to their collection of cars. The Juke-R has become something of a phenomenon and I’m enormously proud of the impact it has had.”

The regular Nissan Juke is a small SUV-style crossover that is sold in markets such as Europe but hasn’t been considered for the Australian market.
