Kia K9: flagship RWD sedan launched

Kia has officially launched its first rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan in more than a decade – the Kia K9 – bringing new levels of performance, design and prestige to the South Korean’s global line-up.

The all-new flagship model has been introduced initially in its domestic market before exports to key overseas markets follow – albeit with a new, less doggish model name – in the final quarter of 2012.

Despite Australia’s history with rear-wheel-drive large cars, you won’t find the K9 in local showrooms – at least in the short term – with Kia confirming there are no plans to launch the car down under at this stage.

Designed as a lower-cost rival to cars like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Kia says the K9 is built on an all-new platform and incorporates levels of comfort, engaging driving dynamics and high-tech features never before seen from the brand.

At 5090mm long, 1900mm wide, 1490mm tall and riding on a 3045mm wheelbase, the K9 is 163mm longer, 26mm wider and 25mm taller than the Audi A6, and has a 133mm longer wheelbase.

The K9 is currently available with a 213kW 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine, and a 245kW direct-injection version will join the global powertrain line-up in 2013. All engines will be teamed with Kia’s new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Four driving modes – Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow – allow the driver to select between pre-programed set-ups that alter the electronically controlled air suspension, steering, engine and transmission to suit road and weather conditions and driving style.

A long list of advanced safety features will be offered, including fully adaptive LED headlamps, lane departure warning, blind spot detection and around-view monitor with four cameras.

The premium interior, seen here in a striking black and white combination, incorporates a 12.3-inch LCD screen in the centre console and two 9.2-inch monitors in the rear, 17-speaker Lexicon audio system, head-up display for the driver and adaptive cruise control.

A ‘VIP’ package offers customers the option of fitting two heated and cooled rear seats with reclining backrests, sliding cushions and lower-leg support for the passenger-side seat, as well as a front passenger seat that slides forwards when unoccupied.

Kia director of overseas marketing Soon-Nam Lee said the K9 would “entice an entirely new customer group of progressive, forward-looking consumers to Kia for the first time”.

“K9 is our first rear-wheel-drive large sedan for more than a decade and sets new standards for advanced design, new technologies and driving performance, representing the ‘best of the best’ of Kia,” Lee said.

You can tell they wanted to rival the 5 series, that automatic gear knob is an almost direct rip off of the BMW one, and a lot of the exterior lines scream BMW…

    • Sonic

I agree… The exterior does have a very strong 7-Series whiff about it. Great effort from Kia though!

    • Lbrinsmead

I agree, but I suppose the 5 series is the best car to benchmark from. Unlike many Japanese cars in this class, except the new Lexus GS, look very average.

    • JooberFPVGT

Yeah looks that way… But I reckon to get away from the stigma of being a cheap korean company, and looking to market luxury they should do a Toyota and make a Prestige (Lexus) brand offshoot, and also have a symbol instead of ‘kia’ that represents upmarket.

That saying i’m not sure what KIA’s strategy in terms of the brand, maybe they want KIA to become the premium household name and eventually all future Cars will be a class above the Hyundai brand.

Anywho, looking nice, i’m liking the models out of this brand, very much a world away from the dull stuff a decade ago,

I’d be really interested to see one in the flesh.

  • Shak

Anyone else think the new Lexus GS interior is scarily similar in the centre console area to this car?

  • Cl1ffo

looks ok, whats with the steering wheel

    • Roger

Mishmash of every luxury brand car, lexus dash, bmw front, jaquar side. The steering wheel seems to be from Mitsubishi lancer from the 90s

The’ve taken a bit too much inspiration from BMW here, both inside an out…

I saw the K9 for the first time in Seoul last month, I also noticed the new Hyundai Grandeur. I think these cars represent healthy Korean/German partnerships and a prosperous Korean economy. Korea is an amazing place to visit.

    • Tangelo

      German won’t be happy.

    • Lbrinsmead

Actually it was the K7, not the K9.

  • Martin

Looks more upmarket than any current Lexus.

    • Aston

It looks more upmarket than most models from the existing luxury brands (Audi, Merc, BMW, Lexus). Its looks are up there with Maserati.

    • Schn

But keep in mind that these are photos generated most likely by computers, which means they may have been ‘photoshopped’ to look more upmarket than it actually is.

Looks more upmarket than any current Lexus.

This is obviously a very dangerous car. It has runaway without a driver behind the wheel. Look, it’s running at 2500rpm and the speedo shows, I’m guessing, about 80km/h.
Unless the driver jumped out when he realised it wasn’t a BMW 7 series.

I like the front, the back looks like a Hyundai Sonata?

  • Mad Max

Not sure about the name though. KIA K9??? So its a KIA Dog then???? Hmmmmmmm

  • Schn

What I really like about this car is the LED headlights, not as in DRL’s but the fact they are the night driving lights.Definitely something new in the automotive sector! Unlike, a lot of the car design language, which looks like a BMW, Audi, and various other brands. That steering wheel looks out of place too. Although I quite like the style of that rear seat control panel.

    • Ryan

That is nothing new Mercedes, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Lexus and more have been using proper led headlights.

      • Schn

Okay I think Audi may have been, but not BMW, and all those other brands. Prove me wrong.

        • Nyb

Lexus was the first brand to ever use LED lights..

          Lexus LS600H

          • Schn

Ahh yes, I had completely forgotten. My bad. Anyway, I think it’s a pretty cool feature, a bit of uniqueness compared to the round projectors used these days.

  • jekyl & hyde

    how much???

    • Matt21811

In the US this car will sell for $45. With the Ausie dollar buying $1.03 but us having a 10% GST the Australian retail price should be $85K AU.

  • Dan

Good job Kia! Only thing I don’t like is the cheap looking steering wheel haha!

  • nugsdad

This is the type of car with perhaps help from Infinity that will one day result in us paying a reasonable price for German cars instead of the current rip-off

  • MisterZed

Oh gee, is it really a surprise we won’t get the K9 here, when we don’t even get the K7??  Seriously, there’s no reason for Kia not to bring the K7 here at least.

  • Sebastian, Style Messiah

Lexus and Infinti should be scared. If the Koreans undercut the premium Japanese
Brands with better looking vehicles, they will be squeezed out. The Germans still have the high ground due to their superior design and solid feel.

    • Hub

      Superior designs? Like Audi A1?

  • john

Complete with a 5 year unlimited km warranty and cars people actually want to buy now, there is little wonder why kia is going from strength to strength. If Korean cars are garbage, why don’t the German, Japanese and Australian car makers have such confidence in their cars to offer such warranties themselves?

    • al

      which “Australian” car makers?…LOL!

      • john

        Good point Al!

      • Mr Irony

Definition of where a car is made is “where are body panels pressed?”

On that score, Toyota, Ford, & Holden press body panels here, so by definition….

  • http://www.commodorelights.com.au/ Holden Headlights

Awesome! Never been the biggest fan of KIA but this one looks pretty good. I might just change my mind about Kia. :)
