BMW X1 Concept first official images
October 1, 2008 by George Skentzos
A tame concept usually means the designers are quite worried about how the new model will be received, this seems to be the case for the new BMW X1 Concept.
Due to make its world premiere at the Paris Auto Show, the X1 Concept previews a new soft-roader from BMW set to compete against the likes of the Toyota Rav-4 and Volkswagen Tiguan.
Although labelled as a concept, these first images essentially reveal the production model due by late 2009 whilst giving BMW some breathing room should its reception be more luke than warm.
Details are scarce at this point, however we do undersand the new BMW X1 will be loosely based on the underpinnings of the current 1-Series and utilises BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but this looks way bigger than the X3, more like X5 size.
looks exceptionally unremarkable. No outside the box thinking at BMW again. This could slot straight under the X3 and would anybody notice? But on the plus side it does look like it has the profile of a wagon so should be more practical than an x6.
That’s absolutely disgusting.
Looks like someone has jacked up a 1 series hatch then kicked the **** out of it.
Looks better than the X3. The X3 is seriously hampered by the black exterior plastic parts.
Phil..you hit the nail on the head….what an absolutely ugly piece of sheet…
But i shouldnt be suprised,
it is a BMW afterall…
Biggest
Motoring
Waste of space… haha
i like it…
haha – after all i am a massive BMW fan though…
i just dont like the squareness of the lower front grill (though it may be the angle).
yeh, some may see this car as pointless, but as a younger guy, this car appeals to me. i like all bimmer “4×4’s”, and although i can’t afford any of them, i’d rather this in topspec over a bottom level X5.
it appeals to me quite a lot actually… but like i said, its catering for younger generations.
Bonnet is too long for the rest of the car – it looks out of balance to me.
dont like the headlamps like the taillamps but doens tlook compact or fun enough.
Looks very ‘Kolean’
WTF is happening at BMW..
First it was X6 and now this…
Looks like someone has lost the plot!
They will sell every one they can get… Unfortunatly the most important piece of metal on this car is the BMW roundrell on the front…
40-50K. sell everyone…. 4 month waiting list soon..
Completely agree w them selling all of them, after all they promise such an exciting lifestyle of parasnowboarding off the Alps, abseiling through the Rockies, fighting sharks etc. Owners will of course have to wear a bag over their heads to hide their shame at being seen in such chunder inducing slab of metal.
Yep could be any thing chinese/korean/japanese with fake bmw grill and badges , they have got that disease the asians all have , lets ‘OVERSTYLE IT”
actually the more i look at tit he better it looks as long as it isnt in that horrible mustard colour but black or white or blue would look good
I love BMW, so I feel that its time somebody killed Mr Chris Bangle. I was thinking of writing fired but I dont think he should be able to design ever again. I dont hate it but I dont hate the Nissan Micra either and its hardly a looker. I just dont get why BMW still has Chris Bangle – every time they bring a new car into the world, more people hate it than dont. The only sane looking cars in their range are the X5 and the 5 series. Alot of people hate the 1, 3, 6, 7, X3 and X6. The Z4s on is own because I like it alot but alot of people dont. I think its supposed to look a little more tough for male roadster buyers but doesn’t quite get there. BMW – get a new designer! QUICKLY! The majority wants you to.
This is just WRONG, making us sick.
Is this a Ssangyong or a BMW?!?!?!
Ahh yeah Bmw will really fire bangel when they are experiencing record sales.
BMW are also going to release an X2 which will be a compact 2 door soft-roader. Its expected to have the same front end as the X1 with the sweeping roof line similar to that of the recently released sporty X6 – which Wheelnut and I both like.
I suppose thats the problem and your right O. BMW are getting record sales. I just wonder if thats to do with design or badge and would it really matter if they looked different? I dont think it looks like a Ssangyong at all. But its not pretty. I suppose the majority of BMWs customers want modern not beautiful but if Aston Martin has taught us anything – theres no reason why you cant have the best of both worlds.
personally i love the X6 hate the X3.The X2 CGis look really good and i hope they turn out like that
The design still, for some reason reminds me of an old sand shoe my dog chewed on for about 30 minutes.
I know they have to basically keep to the BMW image with whatever car they create. But how can this be so fugly, when the M5 can look so good?
I can’t help but worry about BMW now. They don’t seem to have much going for them, yet somehow everyone one of Chris Bangle’s designs walks off the showroom floor. Can a company that shows a new concept in a hideous mustard colour still be considered sane? I like the new 3 series but loathe the rear end, I do like the rear end on this but loathe the rest of the car. The X6 I find interesting, but wildly impractical, the new 7 series is a yawn-fest of epic proportions… Seems like they cannot do a complete vehicle without somehow ruining the asthetic halfway through. I somehow hold very little hope for the future of automotive design.
What’s with the long bonnets for BMWs these days?
If it slots under the X3, it would be about the same size of a Nissan Dualis which is approx. 4.3m long.
The bonnet takes up about 2/5 of the length, which means less than 3m for the interior and trunk. That’s about the same as a Fiesta which is unimaginable for an SUV. This long bonnet thing isn’t working. The space for the rear seats also look like it has more than the front; unusual.
The car also looks bigger than an X3; weird.
