Racer Paul Newman dies at 83

By Matt Brogan |

I guess most of us would be more familiar with Paul Newman the Pasta Sauce than the successful racer he really was. Truth is, Newman supported his racing “habit” by acting to pay the bills.

From Datsuns to Lotus’ through Porsches (Newman co-drove LeMan in 1979 with Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen) Newman was a fan of endurance events, also picking up four SCCA national titles in his time.

A philanthropist, Newman created his food empire to fund camps for sick children. He passed away on Friday aged 83 following a long battle with cancer.

    RIP.

Can’t remember one of his films I didn’t love.

A bonus that he was a petrolhead as well :)

  • Frontman

    RIP..
Thank you for the memories, if everybody was a Quarter of Mr Newman then the world would be a way better place. He will be missed.

If you haven’t seen “Cool Hand Luke” I’ll lend you a VHS copy He was the prince of cool and the fact that he got the race track bug after shooting “Winning” in 1968. A Legend – many will miss his Philanthropy and good nature.

yeah, and married to the same woman for donkey’s years with no scandals, as far as I am aware. A good effort from someone who would’ve had plently of tasty babes throwing themselves at him.

Another September Motorsport loss, at least he had a good innings. Did anyone notice that they had Cars on Channel 7 the day after his death. Just a bit spooky is all considering that was his last movie role.

It is a shame that some of those brian dead so called movie stars didn’t take a lead from him. The world needs more Paul Newmans.
