Top Gear Australia episode two preview

September 27, 2008 by George Skentzos

With the premiere episode just around the corner, Top Gear Australia has revealed all the juicy details surrounding its second episode to CarAdvice.

Top Gear Australia episode two preview

In this episode, the team are poised to settle the great Aussie muscle car grudge match – Holden versus Ford.

Charlie and Steve have taken the HSV Clubsport and FPV F6 to Wakefield Park in NSW for a final performance showdown between the brutes.

Then the trio have also managed to shutdown the largest open pit gold mine in the country – the Kalgoorlie Super Pit, where they will test their ute of choice in a race against the Stig.

After nearly being eaten alive by sharks in the first episode, Warren Brown is faced with yet another ‘deadly’ challenge – to convert a Smart car into a hearse for under $200.

The token supercar for the week will be one of only two right-hand drive Ford GT’s in Australia with Charlie Cox behind the wheel.

Steve Bisley of Mad Max and Water Rats fame will attempt to outpace Vince Colosimo as the star in a reasonably priced car.

Episode two of Top Gear Australia airs Monday October 6th on SBS.

Is the Stig driving the dumptruck? haha

Looks like the ute race is between Navara, Falcon and (is that a?) Jumbuck.

  2. Austin says:

Yep, I wonder who they got to be the Stig to drive the 793, lucky bloke gets bragging rights to being stig for a day :) And damn you all who’ll be able to sit down Monday night and watch the first episode!!

  3. Iz says:

    LOL ITS A JUMBUCK!

    OMG!

I HAVE to see that. Its gonna be utterly hilarious ^_^

I bet Proton will be happy with the “publicity” LOL. You know its always been a childhood dream of mine to drive one of those giant dump-trucks.

Had a huge yellow Tonka tough dump truck which I loved greatly. Remember burying it in our house’s sand pit once.. cant actually remember why =/

  4. SteveC says:

And what a great birthday present it will be to sit on my couch with a beer and a curry to watch the first ever Aussie TopGear episode.

    SteveC

  5. The Salesman says:

Im locking myself in my room, NO KIDS AND NO WIFE…..
dont disturb me during Top Gear.

  6. B///M3 says:

Why are they desperately trying to be like the UK Top Gear? Why can’t they come up with comething original? It ain’t that hard…..

  7. B///M3 says:

    something*

  8. tranquillizer says:

hang on why didnt they take on GT with clubsport. why F6. F6 is less powerful

  9. Andrew M says:

    ^^^^
    maybe so,
But the F6 is the better performer

  10. Tom says:

A f6 is alot faster than a GT, thats for sure.

And about time, this is what top gear australia should be about, we want to see Aussie cars, and aussie tests, not just a clone of the UK version.

The F6 will win no doubt… and i’m a Holden guy.

  11. Capri_XR2 says:

B///M3 dont watch the Australian version then!!!!!
Why would SBS only use the Name and not the same style of format that is working in the UK and maybe Australia and soon the US.
Why LOL about the Jumbuck it has its part in the car market, being the Datsun 1200 and Brumby of this Decade.
I have one, cheap to run, cheap to buy, cheap to insure a great ute.

  12. Brett says:

Please spare us more of the bogan taxi wars; enough already with with Holden / Ford mine is bigger than yours. It is so old and lame.

  13. Oz. says:

I haven’t read the wheels/motor magazine comparisons between the new F6 and the E-series HSVs and I’ve heard the new FGs are a little under-tyred so it’ll be interesting to see how the F6 will go against the ClubSport.

Brett, what are you talking about “Mine is bigger than yours”? The Ford aren’t bigger than Holden engine wise and they quicker. “bogan taxi wars”? What taxis, are they really going to have taxi wars are they?? ….Oh sorry, you mean the FPVs and HSVs are taxis. Well I wish so but not in reality mate.

If you can’t stand a little bit of Holden vs Ford rivalry then don’t watch the Australian series. I personally believe there should be a lot more to the Aussie Top Gear series than just Holden vs Ford all the time but you can’t have it without a little bit of it.

  14. Iz says:

I saw an XR6 taxi once. With spoilers and everything.

    I found it amusing =p

  15. MPG says:

I saw an Aurion taxi, Statesman taxi,Commodore taxi, 380 taxi, Avalon taxi………is that amusing ?

  16. Tom says:

I see alot of Honda Odyssey Taxi’s lately

And Brett, you are exactly what i hate to do with the car scene. You can tell by the fact you used both the word ‘bogan’ and ‘taxi’ you are bias as anything.

  17. Brett says:

    Tom;

Why do I have to be impartial? I am not a judge, or journalist. I have an opinion and I expressed it. And you worked it out all by yourself; I don’t like Falcons and Commodores. And I reserve special derision for the cretins who go around claiming that Falcons and Commodores are world beating cars, which they are not.

  18. Millatime says:

    Brett

The Falcon certainly is, by any comparison, by any measure, by anyone, and that must really annoy the pants off you.

But you are entitled to your opinion. So tell us, if you don’t like Falcon/Commodore, what is it that you do like?

  19. Brett says:

All of the cars in our garage are German; so I guess I like German cars.

For it to ‘annoy’ me that some people are fooled into thinking that the Falcadore is world class, I would have to care; which I don’t. I do however find it amusing that people can be so ill-informed.

If you remove the price distortion of tariffs and other taxes in the Australian market and compare the Falcodore to similarly priced foreign offerings it loses on almost any objective measure. If BMW can produce and sell the 5 series for similar money, and make a profit, what does that say about the Falcon.

  20. Watto_Cobra says:

Sorry Brett, but for comparable money, an XR6T or SS IS “world beating”.

  21. Oz. says:

I’ve noticed there has been a lot of Eurasian import supremacy on Australian car blogs lately and they seem to hate the fact the new Falcon G Series has been compared with European cars. Brett seems to be another one of those European car supremacist, sorry.

  22. Tomas79 says:

Spot on Bret!! To get something German, we got to fork out a great deal more, so just to keep to locally built makes afloat!! If they are truly world class, why not lower the tarrifs, and other protections?? Also why don’t we see the Germans wanting to import those falcons in for themselfs???

  23. Falcodore says:

I am looking forward to ‘Top Gear Oz’. It’ll have all of what the UK version does with an aussie flavour, sounds like a winning formula to me.
Had to go the long way round to get the latest news from this site, there’s a problem with the feed, hasn’t updated since the 23rd. Anyone else experienced this problem or know how to fix it?

  24. I bet any money that the show will be biased big time…well someone got to protect aussie car industry i guess…

  25. Brett says:

Apparently I am ’supremacist’ simply because I compared based on objective data and concluded that there are many foreign offerings that are superior to the Falcadore; particularly when you remove the price distortion. If that makes me a ’supremacist’ then I am guilty as charged. Doesn’t trouble me in the slightest; I’ll still be driving to work tomorrow in a CL 500 and I won’t be looking enviously at the nearest Falcadore wishing I had bought one.

  26. Watto_Cobra says:

Tomas79, you are joking right? We have a measly 21 million population, and you think we should be able to break into euro markets on our own merits?

Euro countries are even more spoilt for than we are. If you are so against our home grown products .ie. made in AUSTRALIA, why don’t you just piss off over there?

  27. Austin says:

Falcodore, nope no problem with the feed here, I use Google Reader on an iGoogle page and it has been receiving the feed no problems.

There are benefits to all kinds of cars, I think the point the comparison is being made is probably a form of flattery in itself. That being said I’d love to drive a nice well built European car if I lived in the city and went on occasional outings to the beach, but for the real world sedan wise I’d probably grab a G6E with a Smart Bar, a pair of Lightforce spotties and a car kit. Each vehicle works in its own environment.

  28. Brett says:

And Tomas79 is right; if these local cars are so wonderful why isn’t the world beating a path to our door asking for exports?

85% of Falcadores are sold to fleets and rest are quietly rusting in holding yards of desperate dealers frantically try to find private buyers. Even the hero FPV F6 is starting to pile up in the yards. World class cars that no-one wants.

  29. Brett says:

    Very mature Watto-Cobra.

  30. Watto_Cobra says:

Brett if they were piling up, maybe I could get my F6 for a big discount, but no, it’s going to cost me 70k. Money well spent in my book. Best Aussie car with the best Aussie engine.

If you don’t like the local product, well BLOODY FINE. Go buy your import and spend your money outside this country like more and more people (some are morons) are doing.

I say “some” because if you want a heavy duty 4WD .ie. Landcruiser/Pajero you have no choice. If you want a small car you have no choice, at least until Focus is produced locally.

Read the reviews Brett and Tomas79, VE has had a few probs but it’s still a great product (in V8). FG is stunning for the budget they had to work with.

You have your choice, no one can stop you buying your bloody import, so go get it. Stop ragging on our local industry because you whingers think you’re better buying some badge. And you can rest easy ignoring the fact that you aren’t supporting our local industry.

  31. Watto_Cobra says:

Yes, you are mature Brett, ignoring that killing off Holden and Ford means thousands of local jobs, then the component suppliers in Oz on top of that. Yep, you are mature mate.

  32. Brett says:

That’s strange Watto-Cobra; I know someone who just bought a new F6 at a substantial discount. The dealer was happy to be rid of it; he had three. Maybe you should shop around; or have you already blown your money?

I would support the local industry if they built a decent car; but they don’t. Simple as that. Paul Keating was right; we should have let the Australian car industry go to the wall years ago. And without massive protection and subsidies that is precisely what would have happened.

  33. mustang says:

zzzzzzzzz boring more bathurst comparos between crummerdores and falcoons .

  34. Watto_Cobra says:

Well you better hook me up then because I haven’t committed yet, and your supposed deals are nowhere in sight around here. I could have 10k off on a demonstrator but I don’t want a car that prospective buyers have already given heaps before it’s properly run in.

But back on topic, if Top-Gear Australia turns into a Ford vs. Holden match (which it won’t), you have the choice to change channel or watch UK TG.

Ooooh it’s all bogan taxis!!! Well change the channel. I choose not to watch olympics or footy or whatever because I can. Why do you have to keep on whinging about a program that hasn’t even aired yet?

  35. Falcodore says:

Some of you seem to be saying that aussie cars bieng a taxi is a bad thing. They’re taxis for a reason, cause they are the best cars for the job. Wonder if the germans think the same way about Mercs, wonder if they think an S class is just a tarted up Nazi taxi? I doubt it very much.
No i do not drive a holden or ford, just letting ppl know what they use for taxis in europe, mercedes benz, the poor mans caprice or G6ET. lol

  36. spam says:

hey watto nobbo get real man the aussie crap car dino’s wont be here in 5 years , old techno doomed to the junk yard just like the rest of the usa owned car makers .

the public has woken up to the junk they have been serving up for years , we dont want shit any more .

  37. Falcodore says:

Yes, back on topic, i hope the show is good enough that it gets screened in the UK and maybe US.

  38. Falcodore says:

Austin, thanks for the tip, cheers.

  39. Watto_Cobra says:

Well Spam, you sure got your name right “nobbo” (great spelling by the way). You must be an automated bot script spreading gibberish on the internet. Read a review or two on the FG, if you really are human, to see just what Aus can acheive. Hmm, why bother replying to a retarded bot script???

Brett, I have nothing against Euro. I KNOW most Euro makes are a class above in most areas. Bang-for-buck tho, Aussie made is pretty decent. Man would I like a Carerra GT or R8 Audi. A long way out of my price range. An M3 would be very nice too. That F6 is sure going to fill the performance hole for me though.

  40. spam says:

yep your a nob as in knobbo , get outta your coon and get in the real world , thats the last of the breed , there wont be another coon ,sales are dying man .

they sold 5600 in nov 2005 , now its low 2500 , they are dead ,as in mitsu 380 dead .

enjoy the last piece of taxi crap while you can .

  41. Falcodore says:

Spam, by saying a falcon is crap cause its a taxi, you are also saying mercs are crap cause they’re used as taxis in germany. Try some objectivity mate! Its an aussie version of Top Gear, its gunna have aussie cars in it, if you dont like that dont watch , ITS THAT SIMPLE!

  42. Watto_Cobra says:

Hmmm, a semi-intelligent bot script. Maybe you are a virus or trojan or more likely a worm. Tell you what Mr Spam-script, what cars get your jollies off if you really have emotions? Please don’t say a white Corolla, I’ll die laughing.

  43. Watto_Cobra says:

BTW your spelling, Mr Spam-script, actually got worse, so I’ll remove the “Semi-”intelligent part from my description of you.

  44. Tom says:

I can’t believe Brett is seriously comparing a CL500 to a Commodore or Falcon, are you kidding me?

Even in the US, were the G8 is a import, a 550i is a good 20 grand+ more expensive.

I do agree, that 10 years ago the Aussie cars wern’t really up to the standard at all, but right now, they are there. They obviously won’t ever have all the high end technology BMW/Mercedes have, but they do what they do very well.

  45. Falcodore says:

Was reading a piece in the ‘Tele’ where they interviewed Warren Brown, he said he wished they had more Ford v Holden so it seems like its going to be very balanced in that regard. Also told of some of the challenges and they sound bloody awesome, hope the show does well. I for one will be watching.

  46. Falcodore says:

Gunna go watch James May’s show on SBS now, chill out with a cold beer. Wonder what will be posted when i check back in halfa, hopefully something on topic and objective. Be nice now ppl :-)

  47. spam says:

yep coon boys it will be just like wheels , more jolly stories about the last of the dino’s , how wonderfull these big aussie crap cars are , full of stories about reliability ,ahhahaahah, great economy ,and of course locomotive power .

  48. Watto_Cobra says:

Haha Mr Spam-script, who wrote your virus programming?

France’s TGV high speed train can do over 515km/h. Pretty quick for a locomotive. If I am talking to a human, you are still too gutless to admit what car you own/prefer. You realise that for fuel economy in the large car class the FG beats Aurion and Accord even with fancy cylinder shutdown. On a highway, it makes a lot of 4 cylinders look average.

Mr bot-script, you have both eyes closed if you think being an inline 6 means dinosaur. BMW and FordOZ proved that wrong. Hmmm, even the almighty Godzilla (up until R35) was, yes Mr Spam-script, an inline 6 cylinder.

If you aren’t just an autonomous PC-generated Oz car-hater how about you fess up?

  49. Carl says:

Brett ….. you are undoubtedly a snob! don’t forget the first few Commodores were based on the “German” Opel Rekord.
