This is a great looking car and I saw one while in Portugal and it was getting all the attention. I went straight to the dealer on my return and they said it will be at least 2 year to reach here. Reading on http://www.scirocconet.co.uk/forum the US wont be getting it either as they reakon it will impact on the new golf gti sales. Plus they already cant meet demand so i think 2 years is realistic.

The reason it is called Fifth Gear is because it is on Channel 5 and a lot of the presenters and staff from the previous Top Gear of the 90’s moved over when the BBC axed Top Gear around 2000. It was then re-launched in the current format with only Jeremy Clarkson as one of the original presenters. You will be surprised to learn that Top Gear has been around since the mid 70’s and is one of the BBC’s longest running shows.

It it were for real it would at least be called Sixth Gear at a minimum. Currently, it’s more like a… Two Speed hydro-matic Gear.

It feels like 5th gear is trying to be more like top gear every single episode. Only its just not interesting.

Looks good on the outside, the interior should be more unique and stylish to make it more unique. Is there a AWD version coming with a more powerful engine, if so then I think its looks will match its ability.

Otherwise the forthcoming Golf GTI-R will blow your socks off and be more practical with five doors, worth waiting for that one i think, even if it takes about 2 years, good things come to those who patiently wait!

@DanMan: Would love to hear any word you may have on the Scirocco coming to Australia. To the best of my knowledge VW Aus haven’t committed either way.

It’s all about the timing – If I hadn’t bought a GTI 2 months ago, I’d be waiting for the Scirocco :) The Scirocco looks like it will come with the 147kw version of the 2.0l engine, so performance will be all but identical with the current GTI, except for the suspension – but AU might not get the new suspension, not sure if specs are finalised yet.

But the GTI-R with 4wd and 200kw version of the 2.0 engine should be a bloody rip-snorter :) :) Pricing will no doubt put it into the territory of the defunct R32.

So it might just be a chip for the current GTI (a small bump up to 195kw/400nm) rather than a new one. Depends on the ASX over he next year or so :)

Still happy with the GTI though, won’t change it for a Scirocco but might be tempted to upgrade when the Golf VI GTI-R is released :)

Better get your Australian delivery orders in now. A little birdie told me you can expect a 2 month delay at launch of this car. They already hold many orders. Well Tiguan already has the longest delivery time of any car under 100k…..
