Coda Automotive begins delivery of electric cars

The first Coda sedans have rolled off the assembly line in Benicia, California, bound for pre-purchase customers and Coda dealers in Southern California.

Coda Automotive, for those still largely unaware of the marque, is an electric vehicle - (EV) manufacturer that produces just one model, the Coda Sedan.

Visually plain, the Coda is an all-electric, mid-size passenger car that comes in two variants: the 201-kilometre range and the 241-kilometre range option.

The Coda is imported from China, where it is known as the Hafei Saibao 3 and re-engineered by the US company, which also adds a different front and rear fascia.

In the United States, California in particular, the Coda has a manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of $38,145, but with the various tax incentives and reduced maintenance and fuel savings that price can drop to just $28,172.

The Coda sedan is a zero-emission vehicle equipped with a long-range, fast–charging, self-regulating all-electric battery, which delivers range dependability because of the car’s bespoke active thermal management system that maintains the optimum battery temperature regardless of how the car is driven.

The Coda employs a lithium iron phosphate battery that powers a compact electric motor producing 100kW of power and 300Nm of torque for a top speed of 137km/h (electronically limited).

It’s no spaceship in terms of design but the Coda does offer buyers plenty of modern kit and functionality. There’s a full-size boot with a 60/40 split-fold rear seat and the car is rated as a five-seater.

Standard features include LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lights, Alpine all-in-one satellite navigation, audio and video on a 7-inch touch-screen and CODA’s cabin-cooling air-conditioning system.

Power is transferred to the wheels via a Borg-Warner eGearDrive single-speed transmission, delivering high torque capacity and claimed low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

Charging the Coda’s battery is as simple as plugging it in to a 220-volt wall plug for a full charge in six hours. All cars come with an additional 110-volt mobile connection for use in any standard household power point across the United States.

The CODA also gets the usual suite of safety equipment including six airbags, electronic stability control with traction control, ABS brakes and three-point, force-limited and pre-tensioned seat belts (front seats only).

All Coda cars are sold with a 3-year/58,000km new car warranty, 5-year/96,000km on the powertrain, and a 10- year/160,000km battery warranty.
