Toyota Australia committed to local manufacturing beyond 2016

Toyota Australia says its commitment to local manufacturing extends beyond 2016, with the company having recently invested hundreds of millions in its Altona engine plant in Victoria.

Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing Matthew Callachor says planning for the next generation of cars is well under way, insisting that the local manufacturer’s "firm intention is to build cars beyond 2016".

Callachor said Toyota Australia also planned to use more locally produced parts in its manufacturing process moving forward.

The upgraded Altona engine plant will come on board later this year. It will produce the 2.5-litre engine for local and export Camry and Camry Hybrid models.

The plant was taken offline last year for a complete revamp, which has seen the installation of a new roof, deeper foundations and 350 new machines, which are currently being individually tested. Volume production will start in late October before it goes into full swing in early 2013.

Callachor said its current position of building hybrid powertrains puts Toyota Australia in a strong piston to attract new model investments from Japan in the future.

The new engine plant will be one of the most advanced of its kind outside Japan, a fact that Toyota Australia believes is a clear indication of its parent company’s confidence in and commitment to our local manufacturing industry.

The company insists its 50-plus years of local manufacturing aided it in securing the trust and investment from Toyota Japan.

Toyota Australia says it's an often-overlooked fact that it secured the funds to build and produce the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion in Australia without government support.

The manufacturer funded the majority of the $300 million engine plant development cost, with contributions also coming from state and federal government.
