Toyota 86 Australian specifications leaked
The Toyota 86 is enjoying unprecedented attention (for a Toyota) before it goes on sale in Australia in June. The rear-wheel drive sports car is expected to be a game changer for Toyota Australia, bringing not only new buyers but an entirely new sense of the brand to the Japanese manufacturer. However, with great demand for information, leaks are starting to appear. The first of which is an official Toyota documentation that was meant for dealer's only.
From the document we have been given the following bits of information: Toyota expects the 86 to appeal to white collar males around the 35-49 age group with a household income of around $150,000. Buyers will be style conscious and understanding of the Toyota 86's purpose.
As is already known, the Toyota 86 will be powered by a 2.0-litre Boxer D-4S petrol engine with 147kW (at 7000 rpm) and 205Nm of torque at (6600 rpm). Buyers will have a choice of either six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, a limited slip differential (LSD) will be available on all models excluding the base model automatic.
Pricing still remains a mystery as negotiations between Toyota Australia and Japan continue, however we suspect the price to be in the high 30s for the standard grade and low to mid 40s for the high grade.
The main outstanding question is what will differentiate the Toyota 86 buyer from the Subaru BRZ buyer (given they are essentially the same car), apart from the price? Subaru will bring the BRZ (later this year) in only one high-end variant and we are waiting to see how the company will position its first rear-wheel drive sports car.

It's fair to point out that even the base model seems well equipped, particularly the inclusion of a 6.1" display and front sport bucket seats. The high grade gets bigger wheels, better trim, HID lights, smart entry and satnav.
It will be available in seven colours and Toyota Australia expects that the sale split to be 50:50 between the two models and transmission choices. 1500 units are predicted for 2012 (six month of retail at 250 units a month) with that target rising to 1800 units for 2013 and 1200 for 2014. We expect the Toyota 86 to launch in Australia on the 7-8th of June.
