FPV turns 5

Ford Performance Vehicles will turn 5 this year, and in order to celebrate the auspicious occasion, FPV has today announced that it will build a special commemorative model, details for which will be revealed at next month’s Australian International Motor Show.

FPV F6

We have seen a few special editions from FPV lately, following last year’s 40th Anniversary GT and Cobra models. However FPV General Manager, Rod Barrett promised FPV fans the special edition model would be a great collector’s vehicle.

TickFord LogoFPV was born after the acquisition of the Tickford by UK-based Prodrive. Motor sport fans would know Prodrive as the leaders behind many motor sport success stories ranging from the Subaru world rally team to Aston Martin.

The first car came in the shape of a V8 FPV GT in 2003 and marked the beginning of a new era in performance motoring, with the company now best known for its turbocharged vehicles.

“When we first launched FPV the brand revolved around the iconic status of the GT, now FPV has grown in only five short years to include two families - the GT and the F6, available in sedan, Ute and SUV models.” said Rod Barrett.

Back to the special edition 5-year anniversary model. Although we have had a hard time squeezing information out of our sources. They all say it will be something truly special. A GT HO?

“There has been much speculation about where FPV will head next, the GT HO is always on the radar, however, it would depend on whether a business case could be achieved and whether there would be market demand when we are ready to release it,” added Barrett.

What about an FPV Focus to sit above the XR5?

“Whether or not we move into the small car market is something we will look at once the Focus is produced here in Australia, of course it is always an option for the future.”

New changes following the motor show will include the addition of unique FPV badging with Mr Barrett saying owning an FPV is no longer about whether it’s a GT or an F6, but about serious performance.

I’ll be on the FPV stand at this years Motor Show, so i hope they tell us what this new model is soon so i don’t look like a typical un-informed salesperson!

  3. Watto_Cobra Says:

Sounds like FocusRS is ruled out for a while yet as a non-Falc/Terri FPV.

    Happy b’day FPV.

There is nothing in that article to indicate whether the special model will be V8 or F6 based.

I can’t see it being a HO unless it has a factory supercharger because a HO must stand a long way above anything current.

  4. The real Mr. Funk Says:

Prediction: HO, cheaper and more power than the w427… but based on the current GT, I predict uglier :)

Disclaimer: The GT looks OK in black, the current XR8 looks great, and the “executive” GT (can’t remember the name atm) looks *horn*.

The recent GT Cobra sedan (that blue and white one) is an absolutely perfect aussie muscle car, I’d love to see them top that.

i would be thinking that we will be seeing a F6R at the motor show, a F6 with a little more power and ability of puting the power down off the line, which hurts the F6 at the moment trying to get 565Nm @ 1950Rpm off the line cleanly… the F6R would need to much to be done to it considering the F6 is quicker then the W427 80 -120 by 0.3 so if they can get it to get off the line clean and add some more power… we could see 4.5 - 4.7 from a F6R with a price tag of 80-90K i would think… lets hope we see a F6R to show what the I6T can do…

Or if dreams did come true it would be a GT Showthing with 410Kw GT500KR supercharged V8 engine… but i dont think this would happen till GT-HO

  6. Glen Says:

If GTHO is released it needs to be the pinnacle of australian performance. So no leather, no extras just a light weight racer for the road. With the GT500KR supercharged 5.4, I would prefer naturally aspirated but you’re never going to get the same power out of the 5.4 that you’d get out of the 7.0 litre W427. Or they could stroke it :D

  7. Oz. Says:

The question is now… Are FPV bringing out a rather special limited edition model, (possibly a GT-HO) with an increase in power, or just discounted models with a new badge throughout the range with all optional features standard?

If FPV were coming out with a GT-HO, (which to me sounds a little to good to be true) it gotta be something really special, something that would knock the W427 off it’s high perch. If not, there’s no point in it.

  8. Bavarian Missile Says:

Awwwwwwwwww it sucks being gagged about the new HO coming out……….and I bet hes watching this site so I don’t make any comments on it………darn!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe as it gets closer Ill be allowed of my leash ,then again I escaped on the Cobra story last year didn’t I hehehe.

    Na I promised!!!!!!!!!

    (Report)

  9. Bavarian Missile Says:

Oz forget about the W427,it will have to knock all those “fastest 4 door in the world” cars off the perch in the year it is released as well,we are talking real race horses in and handling with the next HO!

    (Report)

  10. Tom Says:

I think Ford would think carefully about resurrecting the legendary GT-HO name.

They would have to go balls-out to do it, no expense could be spared and it would have to be an absolute weapon. Atleast 500 horsepower, from a v8 engine.

  11. ZANDIT Says:

Anti spam - XR6!!(not good enough for this forum???!!)LOL!!
Anyway.. Hey BM and everyone else, read a story on go auto before the FG range was released, that the GTHO was planned all-along but obviously canned because of funding. Talk of supercharging, Even Herrod getting onboard to help make it happen and to share costs. Also talk of the Superroo emblem to make a come-back saying they were keeping it in the cupboard for ’something really special’. Mind you it almost came out on the 40th anniversary, but…they canned it because of cost.

  12. Stav Says:

Wheres the Party at?? I’m up for a few drinks!!! as long as the coper Hummer doesn’t come! LOL :)

  13. BIG JIM Says:

When they do the GTHO it definately needs to be stripped back in weight and totally performance orientated, think Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Ferrari F430 Scuderia.

    (Report)

  14. ChopstaR87 Says:

yea a 1500Kg to 1600Kg with 410Kw and 640Nm of torque would hammer!!! the King would arrive if this is what would happen… but most likely will not happen… :(

    (Report)

  15. Daniel Dacey Says:

Maybe new alloys, stripe package and some basic engineering to make the manual cars have less driveline shunt then a tractor.

That would make it special, by FPV standards.

    (Report)

  16. Limited Slip Says:

    Daniel Darcy…….you are a tool.

    (Report)

  17. BIG JIM Says:

Yeah 1500-1600kg kerb weight for the GTHO is quite possible seeing as the AU3 XR8 weighed 1559kg (EB XR8 1505kg). Hopefully they dont weigh it down with excess luxury equipment. Instead they oughta make it with only essential go fast bits, so it can go to 320kph and 0-100kph in low 4 s or lower.

    (Report)

  18. JP Master Says:

Won’t be supercharged… that has been under development for a long time, was almost released for FG, but was canned because of costs and some technical issues. I expect it will come, it just may not be supercharged by then! but a twin turbo!

Onto this commemorative model, I expect it will have no power adjustment, just packaged differently, maybe a new color, different wheels, wider tread on the rears, tweaked shocks etc… maybe some interior tweaks too… (maybe they can afford to add the FPV badge on the steering wheel for this one!).

    (Report)

  19. Bavarian Missile Says:

JP Master ,the HO not Supercharged you reckon????????? mmmmmmm Buttons lip! The HO had to be approved before they even considered moving ahead, never happened in the FG!!

    (Report)

  20. JPMaster Says:

I don’t quite know what you’re getting at BM.

What I am saying is that SC’ing has been on the cards for a longtime, got very close for FG.

Now, I speculate that by the time is does come to market, Ford will have moved on from the SC powertrains and onto turbocharging.

    (Report)

  21. 328cobra Says:

I’m pretty sure it wont be a HO not with the current boss but FPV have kept this really close to there chest so maybe they finally have something special to keep the faithfull blue veins happy till the FPV GTHO arrives in 2010, till then look out for a 5th anniversary GT with R Spec suspension 330kw, new wheels & strip kit

    (Report)

  22. BK Says:

New GTHO should be up there in the top 10 performance cars of the world. XYGTHO was fastest back in the 70s so no need to make this new GTHO the worlds fastest again. Wouldnt be fair for HSV if FPV did it again. The 427 wont be as good as new GTHO so HSV will fail again. Ford got a 5 star safety rating so ford will do something special again with this FORD. HSV fails again. Ford always way ahead to oldhen (holden)

    (Report)

  23. Golfschwein Says:

BK, I’m so pleased you explained your little old hen joke. Otherwise, I might never have understood.

    (Report)

  24. Bavarian Missile Says:

Puts a whole new meaning on playing chicken Golfy!

    (Report)

  25. BK Says:

u gettin all excited again Golfschwein

    (Report)

  26. ChopstaR87 Says:

    a 335Kw and 585Nm F6R anyone???

  27. BIG JIM Says:

In october NZ Autocar they test the F6 and it does 0-100 k.p.h. in 4.82 seconds and 80-120 in a remarkable 2.64 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few issues back in a comparo between GTP and R8 (the GTP is $1k cheaper than an R8 in NZ)they also got 80-120 in 2.95s for the GTP. Heres what they had to say:
“It scored a G6ET equalling 5.28 (0-100)…the best figure we’ve achieved from a production Aussie V8 to date…..80-120 in 2.95s…anything that gets into the 2s is wickedly quick” .”Get it to 3500rpm and it explodes into action”
“[The R8 doesn’t have] the emphatic boost of bravado the Boss displays when its on cam” R8 0-100 in 5.30 & 80-120 in 3.17. …R8 felt slower”
    “GTP 15.1L/100k v R8 18plusL/100k”
“LS3 is starting to show its age”
“THE VERDICT…If forced to choose, it would be the FPV for its superior powertrain, but you’d be mad not to drive the F6 before deciding”

NZ Autocar do the performance testing properly, by using a Vbox and 98RON fuel.
