Audi R8 upgrade coming later in 2012

The Audi R8 supercar is set to get more powerful and more fuel-efficient engines to match fresh styling when the mid-life upgrade is revealed later this year.

Audi has given us our first glimpse of its new flagship sports car in a video that celebrates more than five years of R8 production, following the initial launch of the car in September 2006.

The upcoming car will get a relatively minor update, with a complete overhaul due with the second-generation R8 around 2014/2015.

This year’s upgrade is expected to feature larger LED headlights, a sharper grille and revised front intakes.

Reports suggest Audi has gone to work on the R8’s 4.2-litre V8 engine to increase performance and decrease fuel consumption and emissions. The current powerplant produces 309kW and 430Nm, sprints from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, and burns through 13.6 litres of fuel per 100km when equipped with the more efficient six-speed sequential transmission.

More details Audi’s two-seat all-wheel-drive supercar will be revealed closer to the car’s unveiling later this year, potentially at the Paris motor show, where the car originally debuted almost six years ago.

The R8 has been a successful flagship model for Audi Australia, with 305 registered locally since the car arrived in 2007. Sales were up 32 per cent last year (from 41 to 54), while nine were sold across January and February this year.
