Volvo appoints former Volkswagen designer to shape its future

Volvo has hired a former Volkswagen and Skoda designer to develop the Swedish brand’s future design direction.

Thomas Ingenlath has been appointed to the roll of vice president design at Volvo Car Corporation, succeeding Peter Horbury, who was promoted to senior vice president design with Volvo’s Chinese owner, Geely Group.

Ingenlath, 48, has been working in the automotive industry for 20 years, and has previously held top design positions at Audi (1991-1994), Volkswagen (1995-2000), and Skoda (2000-2006).

Since 2006, he has been director for design at the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Germany, designing vehicles for all brands under the Volkswagen Group umbrella.

Cars penned by Ingenlath during his time at Volkswagen include the Skoda Fabia and Roomster and the Volkswagen BlueSport and NILS concepts.

Ingenlath said he was honoured to lead Volvo’s design team into the future.

“The company is heading for a new era and I am looking forward to be part of that development,” he said. “It will be a great challenge to define Volvo's future design direction.”

Volvo president and CEO Stefan Jacoby was full of praise for his new designer.

“I am very happy that Thomas Ingenlath has accepted the offer to be responsible for Volvo's design,” Jacoby said.

“He is one of the most exciting automotive designers today and will play a central role in Volvo's development towards becoming a top tier luxury auto brand.”
