Spied: New Subaru Impreza sedan
Subaru plans to release the sedan version of the Impreza in Australia in the very near future and CarAdvice has spied some brand new examples in Australia getting ready for public consumption.
With a Suzuki SX-4 esque rear end, the sedan measures up nicely and appears to have sufficient room to operate as a family hauler.
Expected to go on sale late this year, Subaru will launch the vehicle with models parallel to the hatch range. This will include the R, RX, RS. Eventually, the WRX and possibly even WRX STi will follow.
Pricing will start at $24,490 for the R, $26,490 for the RX and $29,490 for the RS model pictured here in red.

Oh god, it looks like Kia, but than again hatch version of the Impreza isn’t any better either….

The rear end always looked like a Kia Rio sedan to me.

looks horrid… yucks!
i suggest Subaru take in some Ozzie car designers aboard…
the problem is what look good on paper don’t translate to the real thing… Subaru management, do take note! your taste sucks…

Nice one!
These through-the-fence pics remind me of the ones I snapped of a very bent GTI shortly after the “launch” event held in Canberra. They seemed to find their way back to Volkswagen very quickly, haha. Story goes Stokell had a bender avoiding a ‘roo. Maybe the CA lads were there?

Liam:
That’s right, the GTI met its maker after a near miss with the ‘roo, it was on a very tight section of the track.

My local dealer has had one sitting out the front of his dealership for a few days all cleaned up and ready for sale. I did a second glance and didn’t like what I saw :-)

Good to see that subaru have continued with the ugly-stick treatment, one day they might actually make a good looking vehicle…..Dont hold your breath
NOT in my lifetime though! :-)

I think this looks 100% better than the hatch… and will probably sell better too. i just feel sorry for those who bought a WRX hatch and then discovered that the sedan was just around the corner.

My brain must be wired differently, I don’t see the ugly?
(Report)
September 5th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I agree, in red it looks like the ugly stick got to it again. It’s something about how the front wheels fit the arches, or don’t fit…. and how little the rear wheels look under the panels, to me it looks all out of proportion somehow, and that curved dash, jeez that’s a mess.

I don’t either Jimbo. People got it stuck in their head that the new impreza was ugly largely because thats what everyone else was saying and they didn’t want to be different. But the fact is that in the metal the new impreza is perhaps not a stunning looking car, but its certainly not ugly. This sedan version looks fine to me.

Hi Richo. For mine, just because other people were saying it was ugly, has no influence on me. The thing just looks ugly in most angles. It’s just not a good thing to look at. And the plastics look / feel cheap, and the seats are really soft and offer little lateral support. I have owned 5 subies over the years, this new model just stopped me dead.

Why has the sedan Impreza’s being delayed for the Australian market? I saw some in America.

September 5th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Noooo!!!
I’ve seen the sedan model sold already in USA, and the same ugly stick has applied.
I really hope that Subaru launch a new shape next year, and fire the people that approved this design.

Some will love it.
Some will hate it.

When the new impreza originaly came out I thought it was hideous, i think because of the shock, then it has grown on me, and in fact I am looking to buy a RS now.
But I will 10000% stick to the hatch the back of that sedan like already mentioned looks like a KIA and they could have made it a bit nicer! although it is a very korean looking car in the first place.

What the bloody hell is going on with these stupid designs? It is a successful ploy in increasing the resale value of the old models. Perhaps that is their goal???

The sedan looks really good in rs model, with the body kit and rear spoiler, chrome dual exhaust pipes. But the std sedans look ugly without the bodykit! boot looks awkward unless it has the spoiler. but i think the rs and the wrx sedan when its released will sell very well..

The sedan has always been on sale in other countries. It looks awful. Why can’t Subaru do something nice like they did with the Liberty. I hope they don’t stuff up the new design of it.

Subaru launched the sedan only in the US initially because that’s what the Americans buy and it could not satisfy US demand + the rest of the world.
Now the US is satisfied the rest of us will get the sedan.

Sam if the ugly design of the new Subaru Impreza is a ploy in increasing the resale value of the old models.. then I ain’t complaining as I own a 2002 2.5 Litre Bug- Eyed Impreza RS; which copped a caning for its bizarre looks when it was released.. yet when compared to every impreza model since is far better looking.
Not to mention that every RS since then has had to make do with a 2.0 litre instead of the 2.5 litre boxer which is now exclusive to the WRX.
Why? - I can only suggest that its because with a few minor enhancements such as a K&N air filter etc I have been able to get almost as much power as a WRX out of the 2.5 Litre without the need for a turbo and thereby not incurring the sports car insurance premium my Brother in Law does with his WRX.

Wheelnut, i disagree with that, the model that followed the bugeyed is much nicer looking, so too is the very last of the sedans (even though not quite as nice as the MY04).

I agree with Jimbo and Richo.. it looks pretty good, now the hatchie is OOGLY. LOL
NEWSFLASH, this sedan model is ALREADY in the US.. man you guys are late to the Subaru party. The Impreza was mildly restyled in 2001, and looked very similar to the 1st 1993-2000 model. Whatup with the all around porkier 2008 Impreza??
I guess Subaru wanted to go back to it’s WEIRDO designs like it’s BUTT UGLY 1970s Subies(if ya don’t believe me.. scroll 1975 Subaru coupe). Geez.. and us Americans thought the AMC Pacer and Gremlin were OOGLY?? LMAO :P

Uh, the bugeye 2001 and the 2004 are EXACTLY the SAME generation of Subaru.. Check out the bodystyles of both models. The ONLY thing different is the bugeyes versus the normal 2004 headlight treatment. THAT’S IT.
It’s not a separate generation!!

The sedan has been officially launched to the Australian market! I found all the details on pressportal.com.au
I agree, it look so ugly and boring! Two steps backward for Subaru i say… Never a fan of the front grill or the hatch, and now that i’ve seen the sedan varient… ALL HOPE IS LOST!

Typical comments from the keyboard warriers, who haven’t even seen one.
This car is on display at the Adelaide show (and has been since last friday), and I think it looks much better than the hatch.
The proportions look quite nice, and the rea-on view is actually VERY similar to the Liberty, when you look at them side by side.
If (when?) this is launched as WRX it will outsell the hatch hands down.
