Giugiaro Brivido concept unveiled

It means 'thrill', and that’s exactly what Giorgetto Giugiaro hopes his functional, four-seat hybrid called the Giugiaro Brivido gives the crowds at the Geneva motor show following today's unveiling.

Giugiaro calls the Brivido a Gran Turismo that offers supercar performance, respect for the environment and truly advanced technology for a working prototype that is ready for the road.

The numbers are indeed impressive considering it’s 4.98-metre length and clear focus on passenger comfort and practicality. The Giugiaro Brivido will sprint from 0-100km/h in 5.8 seconds and terminal velocity is 275km/h.

Not bad when you consider the car’s 1326-litre luggage capacity with the rear seats folded, or 355-litres in the upright position.

Technical specifications for the Brivido include a 3.0-litre V6 engine developing 265kW of power and 460Nm of torque. The hybrid system (details are scarce) produces 300kW and 460Nm, and there’s an eight-speed transmission driving the rear wheels.

The suspension is high-tech too, with double wishbone and adaptive air suspension with levelling system and automatic ride height adjustment for the front, and a multi-link system using the same adaptive unit at the rear.

The Brivido was designed and manufactured at the Italdesign Giugiaro facility at Montcalieri in Turin. The body uses a combination of aluminium, carbonfibre and glass – which along with the windscreen, glass roof and large window area form a glass dome that allows natural light to flow into the rear-seat passenger area.

“This is a quest for a genuine four seater to offer comfort and visibility, especially for the rear passengers, which is usually sacrificed in this type of vehicle”, said Giugiaro.

“As always, I’ve tried to offer solutions, which can be achieved practically. The inclusion of a pair of wide doors that rise like gull wings is the only ‘exotic’ concession which makes the Brivido a show car. The rest of the solutions are perfectly applicable for vehicles destined for the market. The rear passengers, specifically, can access their seats without having to duck down or lower the front backrests. Instead they can enter the vehicle easily and naturally.”

The Brivido makes extensive use of LED technology with a bespoke light cluster set up, front and rear that includes repeaters that stretch along the side panels of the car.

There are no side mirrors. Instead, two streamlined cameras positioned on the front three-quarter panels, which emerge only when the system is activated, have replaced them. Even more sci-fi is are the two monitors mounted on the steering column.

More advanced technology is found inside the cabin with the use of the ultra lightweight Titan-Tex (titanium fibre) and the driver-centric instrument cluster, which houses one LCD screen, with another mounted above the iPad doc in the front passenger seat. This means the passenger can access the same information as the driver.

There’s another touchscreen display for the climate control, which descends from the ceiling on request.

The Giugiaro Brivido is a hugely interesting concept and one that promises an exciting array of technology for future vehicles under the Volkswagen Group umbrella.
