Hyundai i-oniq concept spreads its wings

More images of the Hyundai i-oniq concept have leaked online ahead of the all-new hybrid coupe’s official premiere at this week’s Geneva motor show.

The new images reveal for the first time the sleek two-door hatch’s front-hinged scissor doors, along with the prominent rear end and futuristic red cabin.

Hyundai says the i-oniq concept previews “the next evolution of the brand’s ‘fluidic sculpture’ form language”. The concept showcases elegant lines and clean panels, appearing much less busy than current designs like the i45 sedan and ix35 SUV.

The i-oniq’s face is simple and delicate with an attractive Aston Martin-style thin-slat grille and Mazda-esque headlights. From square on at the rear, the concept has elements of Jaguar XF and Tesla Model S, although the elliptical C-pillar line is fresh and unique.

The driver is confronted by a dramatic steering wheel, which is backed up by blue displays and lighting and silver controls. Blood red dominates the seats, carpets, ceiling and centre console. The i-oniq’s designers say the interior was inspired by musical instruments, creating a “lounge-style space” four its four occupants.

The size of a small hatchback, the Hyundai i-oniq concept is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack.

It’s capable of driving in electric-only mode for 120km and can travel up to 700km with help from the petrol engine.

More images and details of the Hyundai i-oniq concept will be revealed at Geneva from Wednesday.
