Kia K9: first ever rear-wheel drive Kia revealed

Set for the Korean market, Kia has released the first official images of the all-new Kia K9 large luxury sedan. The new car will join Kia's K series lineup, consisting of the Kia 'K5' Optima, and the Kia K7.

Although not yet official, the Kia K9 is set to come with three different engine options. These include an entry-level 3.8-litre V6 producing 248kW, a 4.6-litre V8 producing 287kW, to a range-topping 5.0-litre 'Tau' V8 producing 320kW. All engines come from Hyundai.

The new K9 is turning out to be one of the most anticipated models to come out in Korea, stepping into the premium end of the large sedan market. It's promising to boast various new technologies, and a high level of on-road performance from a range of rear-wheel drive powertrains.

As for the styling, the Kia K9 was inspired by the Maserati Quattroporte, according to company chief design officer Peter Schreyer. At the front you can see some resemblance, particularly around the pronounced centre fascia and grille area.

Soon-Nam Lee, director of the overseas marketing group, recently said the "K9 is our first rear-wheel drive large sedan, created without compromise in its design, driving performance and new technologies. K9 sets a whole new level of standards and values in the large sedan segment, and its design will be another Kia demonstration of our brand's power to surprise the world".

Kia will export the car to other markets, potentially under a different name, however, markets and specifics are yet to be finalised. It is due to go on sale in Korea during the first half of this year.
