Volvo V40 exposed in detailed images

Official images of the Volvo V40 have surfaced online, finally giving us a clean look at the new compact hatch after a string of teasers and blurry leaked images.

Showing a clear relationship with Volvo's current crop of vehicle designs, the new V40 features clean, flowing styling in five-door hatch form, with hints of aggression around the lower front end and at the rear.

The first thing you may notice is the large glass roof. Whether this will be included on all production models is still unclear. It blends as one smooth panel into the windscreen.

The Volvo V40 features a high waistline with low-profile side windows, raked A-pillars and a decent rear overhang with a spoiler.

As for the powertrain options, full details will be revealed at the Geneva motor show next month. The new V40 will come with a range of four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

Volvo is looking to take on the compact car segment with the new V40, offering competition to rival cars such as the Audi A3, BMW 1-Series, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

It will go on sale in European markets later this year, with an Australian debut set to take place in early 2013.
