Audi A1 considering Fiat 500C rival: rumour

Rumour has it Audi could be working on a new open-top version of the A1. Not to be confused with a full convertible layout, the potential new variant is said to feature a peel-back cloth roof, similar to the Fiat 500C.

Audi boss Rupert Stadler has previously rejected the idea of an A1 convertible, saying it would be too expensive to develop the platform, especially as it would be a standalone model, and not one that would be sold under Volkswagen or Skoda.

According to an Autocar report however, rumours trickling out from the German manufacturer indicate a possible lift-back version is in the works. It's understood a design study has worked its way into prototype consideration stages.

The variant is said to feature an electric cloth roof that electronically peels back as one huge sunroof. The design leaves all pillars in their positions, while the tailgate is also said to remain untouched.

With relative little major structural changes, the idea will reportedly remain cost effective enough for Stadler to give the green light.

It is only early days yet, and no official announcements have been made. What do you think? Should Audi build an A1 cabriolet of some sort to rival the 500C and Mini Cabrio?
