Holden is now set to offer its diesel engine in a two-wheel drive Captiva for the first time.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine had previously been available only with all-wheel drive Captiva models.

When coupled with a manual transmission, Holden boasts the new 2WD diesel model leads the medium SUV segment as the most fuel efficient - using 7.2-litres per 100km.

The automatic model returns a slightly less impressive figure, using 8.5-litres per 100km.

“For consumers who want all the benefits of a medium SUV but don’t need the performance of an AWD, the 2WD Captiva SX is the perfect solution,”

At $33,990 for the five-speed manual and $35,990 for the five-speed automatic, the 2WD models represent a $2,000 saving over their equivalent all-wheel drive counterparts.

The five-seater 2WD Captiva diesel is available as an SX model, retaining the trim levels of its AWD equivalents which include Traction Control, Active Rollover Protection, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and six airbags.

The 2WD Captiva SX with automatic transmission is on sale now, with the manual transmission variant scheduled to be in dealerships late September.

  1. Adam Says:

Captiva’s only come with 4 Airbags, which is standard across the range.

    (Report)

  2. George Says:

Six airbags according to the press release.

“six airbags including driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags as standard.”

  3. Gift-Ed Says:

That should be worth a few more sales.

  4. Myke Says:

It would be better if it were also available in CX and LX spec aswell, the fact the FWD doesn’t offer 7-seats will lose a few sales I’m guessing.

OOPPPS Holdens go better ………. you wish

  6. Dlr1 Says:

This article gives the impression that the 2wd version of the Captiva has been around for some time, and the diesel model is a new addition. In reality the new part is the 2wd system. The Holden website currently makes no reference to any 2wd Captiva models. It lists all models as AWD.

So don’t be fooled by “Diesel now available ” in a particular model… the story is really Holden now sells cheaper 2wd version for less cash. The press release now seems a little less impressive doesn’t it?

another piece of bland boring crap from the masters of crap……….Daewoo…..eerrrr Holden……..

  8. Frenchie Says:

Geez I thought they get better fuel economy than that for diesel. Friends Prado is getting 9 litres per 100km and that SUV is alot bigger. Also an auto!

  9. Matt Says:

“leads the medium SUV segment as the most fuel efficient - using 7.2-litres per 100km.”

In the story below, the Grand Vitara Diesel is stated to use ONLY 7.0L/100km, therefore the Craptiva is not the most efficient?

  10. Fenno Says:

Its a ‘Claytons’ 4wd. (the 4wd you have when your not having a 4wd). Just so the neighbours are fooled into thinking you actually have a life. These cars (along with the 2wd Territory and the FWD Kluger) are just oxygen thieves and dont need to exist.

  11. Reckless1 Says:

These are the biggest collection of idiot comments in quite a while.

Hopefully the commentators don’t ever breed.

  12. Richo Says:

took the words out of my mouth Reckless1

in my experience everyone who has actually driven a captiva usually comment along the lines of “hey thats not actually a bad car! i quite liked it”

  13. Fenno Says:

Does that include both yours and Richo’s comments Reckless?

  14. Bret Says:

Gee a few slightly less than glowing remarks about a Daewoo, and out trots the Holden troopers of Reckless1 & Richo. Well done boys!

  15. Richo Says:

i don’t know how many times i have to say that i’m a mitsubishi person on these forums! I just can’t stand the crap that comes out of peoples mouths about the “holdenwoos”.

Theres nothing wrong with putting right a few (lot) of missconseptions Brett.

    (Report)

  16. Frenchie Says:

Don\’t get me wrong. The Captiva is a very well built and nice to drive SUV, if you like that sort of thing! Just thought Holden could achieve a better fuel economy for marketing purposes. Also the Captiva is reasonably roomy and is half the cost of the Prado!

    (Report)

  17. Reckless1 Says:

And I drive a Golf GTI and a Jackaroo.

The thing is, bret, none of the numnuts would have driven a Captiva, which hasn’t outsold Territory but it’s only about 20% down.

There is nothing wrong with the Captiva, it’s up there with the best of the Koreans like Hyundai and Kia. Are they quite up to BMW/MERC/Audi? No, but neither is Territory.

    (Report)

  18. Richo Says:

plus the problem with a territory, although being a cracking drive (by SUV standards) and having one of the most practicle interiors of all cars, its unfortunately excessively thirsty. Even with the 6 speed auto she just drinks way too much juice to be considered a serious option for families, in my opinion anyway. Problem is alot of family type buyers don’t realise this untill after they have bought the thing! Because at the moment they are very well priced and well equiped, but then they get one and say “holy jesus how much petrol does it want!”

    (Report)

  19. AC COBRA Says:

For the size and power ratio the Ford Territory is still a much better pick than Captiva, you have to remember after loading the the vehicles with people and luggage the Ford will be more driveable, including power left over, where as Captiva would struggle with fuel economy in any situation and much less power going up hills, making these engines inferior to other diesel or petrol variants.

It’s simple Ford Territory GO BETTER !!!!!!!

    (Report)

  20. Bret Says:

Reckless1 & Richo, not disputing you alliegences, just commenting on the obvious, and it IS obvious.

BTW, I may on occaisions not agree with you opinions, but I will defend to the end of the earth your (and every elses) right to have those opinions and to voice them.
    Cheers.

7.2 is pretty good, but this is only a medium medium, not a large medium like Territory. Territory consumption can be terrible for some people, but I know several families who, with reasonable mixed highway/metro driving use less fuel than a VE in mainly metro.

    (Report)

  21. SteveV Says:

7.2 l/100 km doesn’t compare with the Santa Fe which IS AWD, gets 7.3l/100 km and has a larger 2.2 diesel, is bigger and has superior Kw and Nm ’s. Why would you buy the Captiva? Only because it has a faux Holden badge?
2 grand saving also doesn’t seem a great incentive over AWD which will give significant safety and road handling advantages and the ability to drop it on the beach or up a rutted hill whenever the feeling takes you.

AC Cobra, you obviously haven’t driven one of these diesel SUV’s or else you’d appreciate just how much torque they still do have when fully loaded, going up hills or towing. Quite surpising, whilst still blowing the Territory out of the water for fuel economy. I love the Territory, but just can’t afford it anymore. Destined to lose value on fuel consumption alone. Diesels will retain their value for a long time to come.

    (Report)

  22. Richo Says:

Cheers Bret, but my opinion still stands that a captiva is still an extreemly competent family vehicle. I actually have driven one, which puts me in a far better position to comment then most of the anti-holden brigade around here. Yes some of the daewoo derived products are very ordinary, but the captiva is not one, its a very good vehicle. Every review i have read about the captiva has been very positive aswell, so its not just me.

AC COBRA - I like the territoy, but it IS too thirsty, thats just the way it is. The captiva’s V6 is quite capable and is powerful enough to move it along even with a full load, yeah its not as grunty as the territory, but it still has more then enough power, so your argument there is flawed.

    (Report)

  23. silky Says:

Had a client buy onwe of the 4wd jobs, had battery drainage issues all the way from QLD to NT. And then the electronics started. He like the vehicle, was towing but its now for sale 14000 kms, 9 dealer visits. Don;t kid yourself, Holden is garbage.

    (Report)

  24. silky Says:

And Richo its not driving one that maters, its buying one and owning it, warts and all, dealer visit after dealer visit..garbage.
