Skoda Citigo five-door headed for Geneva

The Skoda Citigo five-door hatch will make its world debut at the 2012 Geneva motor show in March before hitting the European market with its three-door sibling in mid May.

The first image of the five-door Citigo comes exactly one week after Volkswagen lifted the lid on the five-door version of the Up! – the Citigo’s sister car.

Skoda Australia is yet to officially confirm the local launch of the Citigo, and at this stage it appears unlikely to arrive here before 2013. Skoda spokesman Karl Gehling says the Citigo is certainly a model of interest for the brand and is under consideration for our market.

Volkswagen Australia last week confirmed both three- and five-door variants of the Up! would arrive Down Under together towards the end of this year. If Skoda Australia launches the Citigo, it would seem logical for it to follow suit with both body styles of its sub-compact hatch.

The Citigo shares its dimensions with the Up!, measuring 3563mm long, 1641mm wide, 1478mm tall and riding on a 2420mm wheelbase. The three-door Citigo’s 251-litre boot and 951-litre expanded cargo volume (with the rear seats folded forward) should carry over into the five-door model.

Despite its sub-compact footprint, the Citigo – along with the Up! – has been awarded a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, coming standard with four airbags and electronic stability control.

The Citigo also shares its powertrain technology with the Up!. Two tunes of a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine will be offered – 44kW/95Nm and 55kW/95Nm – with the most efficient model set to use just 4.1 litres of fuel per 100km.

Volkswagen Australia is yet to confirm pricing for the Up!, although the three-door is expected to start below $15,000. If it launches in Australia, the Skoda Citigo would be priced similarly to the Volkswagen, potentially undercutting it by a small margin.
