Porsche Cayenne production hits 100,000

Porsche has celebrated the production of the 100,000th second-generation Porsche Cayenne at the company's Leipzig facility in Germany.

The facility, which currently produces the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Panamera, is also celebrating its 10th anniversary and is about to undergo a major expansion.

Porsche will produce the upcoming Porsche Cajun small luxury SUV in 2013 once the expansion has taken place, while high demand for the Panamera and Cayenne has also forced Porsche to start a third work shift. Wolfgang Leimgruber, member of the executive board at Porsche production and logistics, recently said,

"Ten years ago the success story of Porsche Leipzig started. What was a greenfield site today ranks among the most modern car plants in the world. In addition to the Cayenne, Leipzig is also where Porsche produces the very successful Panamera luxury saloon, approximately 70,000 units of which have now rolled off the production line. That is why more than 93,800 vehicles left the Porsche plant in Leipzig in 2011, more than in any year before."

The first generation Cayenne was produced from 2002 until 2009, during which over 360,000 rolled off the line. With the current second-generation reaching 100,000 in just three years, its sales future looks good.

The milestone 100,000th example was a white Cayenne V8. It's headed for Brazil.
