2012 Subaru XV: Australian prices and specifications

The 2012 Subaru XV is now on sale in Australia, introducing an all-new design, new petrol engine, a strong safety package and a sub-$30,000 starting price.

Essentially a higher-riding version of the fourth-generation Subaru Impreza hatch (due in March), the all-wheel-drive XV breaks away from the Impreza family to become a model in its own right.

The entry-level 2.0i six-speed manual is priced from $28,490 before on-roads, while the range-topping 2.0i-S variant with the optional continuously variable transmission (CVT) starts at $36,990.

The 4.45-metre XV compact SUV is 35mm longer and 40mm wider than the new Impreza hatch. Significantly, it has 75mm extra ground clearance (220mm in total), although its boot is smaller by 30 litres (310 litres) as Subaru Australia chose to equip the XV with a larger (but still not full-width) spare tyre.

Like the 2012 Impreza, all variants of the Subaru XV are powered by a new 110kW/196Nm 2.0-litre boxer petrol engine. Equipped with start-stop technology, the manual models use fuel at a rate of 7.3 litres per 100km, while the CVT variants are even more frugal at 7.0L/100km.

The XV 2.0i comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, roof rails, rear spoiler, climate control, cruise control with steering wheel buttons, paddle shifters (CVT only), height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a six-speaker audio system with CD player, USB, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity.

The standard safety kit is impressive, with seven airbags (dual front, side, curtains and driver’s knee), electronic stability control and a reversing camera fitted to all models.

For an extra $3500, the XV 2.0i-L adds dual-zone climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, rear privacy glass, satellite navigation with voice activation, sunroof and a sliding centre console.

For $2500 on top of the mid-spec variant, the XV 2.0i-S completes the range with HID headlamps, chrome exterior door handle inserts, silver roof rails, mirror-mounted indicators, drilled alloy pedals, eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat, leather upholstery and heated front seats.

2012 Subaru XV manufacturer’s list prices (excluding government and dealer charges):

  • 2.0i-L manual – $31,990
