Audi Q1 compact crossover under consideration: report

Audi is apparently considering an Audi Q1 mini crossover, based on the company’s smallest model, the A1.

It is early days yet, but according to a What Car? report from the UK, an Audi insider has given indications that such a model is under consideration.

"You've seen how our SUVs have been getting smaller – Q7, Q5, Q3 – and the A1 platform could go in that direction."

Audi is yet to announce official plans for the model, but the company is looking to expand the use of the A1 platform. It recently introduced the Audi A1 Sportback, a five-door version of the A1, which is due in Australia mid-year.

It's understood the Audi Q1 would be a jumped-up version of the A1, with a taller overall height and increased ground clearance, showcasing a revised tyre and wheel package more suitable for light off-roading.

If Audi executives do give it the go ahead, it isn't expected to see light of day for a few more years yet. The insider said that nothing is planned for the near future.

The vehicle segment is still very fresh, with both Ford and GM recently unveiling their versions of super-compact crossovers. Ford has the EcoSport, based on the Fiesta, while GM unveiled the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, based on the new Barina.
