2013 BMW X5 spied

BMW has been spotted testing a prototype of the next-generation BMW X5, expected in 2013. This is the first time a prototype of the new model has been seen in public.

The 'F15' BMW X5 will be built on a heavily revised version of the BMW 5-Series platform. Engineers are set to adapt various construction technologies in the aim to reduce the big SUV's weight, and in turn reduce fuel consumption.

It is too early to know for sure what powertrains will be offered in the new model, but the usual line-up of turbocharged petrol and diesel six-cylinder units, and a twin-turbo petrol V8, are expected to return in revised form. An ActiveHybrid variant is also on the cards.

The current second-generation X5 has been around since 2006. It will continue on the market until 2013. The 2014 model will feature a fresh new design, showcasing BMW's latest design language, sharing similar design themes as seen on the new 1-Series and 6-Series, with a restyled front twin-grille layout.

As for technology, the F15 X5 will feature BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system, self-leveling air suspension with Adaptive Drive, night vision, park assist, traffic-sign recognition, and fuel-saving measures such as stop-start.

The 2014 X5 is expected to be unveiled sometime in late-2013.
