The original Smart Fortwo micro car may have been questioned by some for its relevancy outside cramped European cities but a new ute concept called For-us unveiled by Daimler’s city car subsidiary should be more at home in Australia.
The Smart For-us is an urban-focused utility that could further expand the range of a brand that is currently limited to just the two-seater Fortwo and Fortwo Cabrio models.
Smart says the For-us is “for the young and young at heart with active lives who attach importance to low emissions and taking up minimal road space”.
At 3547mm long and 1701mm high, the Smart For-us is noticeably bigger than the Fortwo – including a wheelbase that’s also 613mm longer. The tracks are also 50mm wider.
The platform is expected to underpin the next-generation Forfour four-seater that will be twinned with the new Renault Twingo, both due in 2014.
The For-us is still a two-seater but the concept’s tray accommodates two Smart electric-powered ebikes that recharge when locked into the docking station.
The electrically operated tailgate lowers and the tray retracts by 280mm to allow easier cargo storage.
Electric power also motivates the Smart For-us itself, with the concept featuring a 55kW/130Nm electric motor with lithium-ion battery pack that will debut in a production Fortwo electric variant later this year in the US.
Smart says the For-us ute can achieve speeds in excess of 120km/h.
