2012 Subaru Forester 2.0D, Outback 2.0D more fuel efficient

Subaru Australia has upgraded its two diesel models for 2012, with the Forester 2.0D and Outback 2.0D now offering improved fuel economy and smoother gearshifts.

The Forester and Outback diesels are equipped with the same 2.0-litre diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission – a combination that is now 6.2 per cent more fuel efficient than before.

The 2012 Subaru Forester and 2012 Subaru Outback use 6.0 litres per 100km of fuel on the combined cycle (down from 6.4L/100km) and emit 158 grams of CO2 per kilometre (down from 168g/km).

The 2012 diesel engine produces its peak torque from 1600-2400rpm (200rpm lower than before), which promises to generate greater pulling power at lower engine speeds. Peak power remains unchanged (108kW at 3600rpm).

A number of upgrades have been made to the engine, resulting in improved turbo efficiency, weight savings and lower internal friction.

The improved gear-change sequence has been achieved through a number of refinements – including the addition of low-friction bearings – creating an easier shift feel for the driver.

Despite the upgrades, prices are unchanged for both the standard and Premium variants of the Forester and Outback 2.0D.

2012 Subaru Forester diesel, Outback diesel manufacturer’s list prices (excluding government and dealer charges):

  • Forester 2.0D – $36,490
  • Forester 2.0D Premium – $40,990
  • Outback 2.0D – $40,990
  • Outback 2.0D Premium – $46,990
