Mazda2 snares record July sales
August 5, 2008 by George Skentzos
The littlest car in Mazda’s line-up has made a big difference to its bottom line, resulting in a new record best month for Australia’s favourite imported brand.
The Mazda2 sold 1,447 units this July – a 147% increase on same month last year – snaring the company a new monthly sales record, retailing a benchmark 6,508 new cars.
According to VFACTS figures released today, Mazda’s share in the light sub-$25,000 segment jumped by a not so insignificant 8.3 percent to secure a number four spot on the overall sales tally.
“It’s great news for Mazda that we’re ahead of where we need to be to reach our stated goal of 80,000,” said Mazda Managing Director Doug Dickson. “And with a number of new model initiatives, the second half of the year should be just as good.”
With 49,001 new cars sold so far this year, Mazda now holds a 7.8 percent share in the Australian new car market.

Anti Spam word = Mazda.lol
Is good news for Mazda but i dont think the term australias favourite import brand is quite accurate seeings as Toyota is still an import brand and it sells more cars per month. granted some to fleets but it still sells more
Well done Mazda – Love the Mazda 2 obviously smaller cars are the things to be selling. Fords fiesta is better to look at and the interior is stunningly different.
Great news.
I love mazda interior than any thing.
I makes me feel comfortable.
I have had my Mazda 2 Genki since Feb and I’m loving it more and more every day asits a great little car cheap to run and for a 1.5ltr it has enuff zoom zoom…
Arlester, all Mazdas in Australia are imported while some Toyota’s are assembled here, such as the Aurion and Camry, so that is probably where that came from.
Mazda are definitely producing some of the best family cars around. he 3 is awesome, and so is the 6 and the new 2 is just stunning, alot better than the Yaris.
Mazda is one desirable brand currently. Mazda have done a great job and don’t sell many to fleets, they have some of the highest levels of retail sales.
Mazda is the most popular IMPORT brand, Toyota assembles vehicles here as well as imports, like Ford and Holden.
The other point in the “top import” thing is that Mazda do not sell vehicles to fleets, whereas the vast majority of Toyota’s sales (as for Holden and Ford) are fleet sales.
I’m a Toyota fan, so I’m not knocking them, but the numbers that mean most to me are the sales to people who are actually spending their hard-earned money, not via their business.
Good job Mazda. Like many have said before, Mazda is the best selling FULLY IMPORTED brand here in Australia. Quite a great come back considering in the 90’s Mazda was almost unheard of by most people, and now it has secured 4th position amongst auto makers in Australia. Zoom Zoom ftw.
Buddha, all the big brands sell to fleets. Mazda is no different, they may sell less passenger cars to fleets, but their BT-50, like most other commercials is dominated by fleet and business sales.
Mazda, Honda, Subaru, VW sell nowhere near the number to fleets like the big brands.
Buddha is correct.
Mazda’s BT-50 may be a high fleet seller, so is all other brands when it comes to COMMERCIAL vehicles only.
It’s quite interesting to note that Mazda matches Toyota for retail sales yet Toyota sold over 200,000 units last year while Mazda sold about 60-70,000 units.
Thats shows you how much fleet sales has boosted toyota’s overall sales.
mazda is the 4th best selling brand, they have done a great job is maintaining retail sales while growing overall sales, many other big selling brands would love this scenario.
Go toyota…
Did you read what i posted above??
Obviously not.
Work the numbers, it’s basic math.
Mazda = toyota for retails sales yet toyota sells over 200,000 ints per year and mazda 60-70,000.
What does that say to you??
Go Toyota…
You might want to look at the goauto site also, the FG was just awarded 5 stars for crash safety.
Take a particular look at the scores, well above the aurion.
Fg has now been placed amongst the highest ever scoring in the crash safety records…
Deserves to out sell the crappy Yaris.
Yaris has seats made of wet suit material or at least that’s what it looks like and dicky speedo in the middle of the dash
which is Toyota retarded.LOL.
People obviously buying the Mazda 3 instead of the Yaris which has restored my faith in humanity somewhat.LOL.
mmmmmmmm……..agree I don’t like the Yaris either! Who would anyway?
Blue nurses and the rental companies!
Mmmm wearing fishnets.LOL.
LOL
Dingo,(Go Toyota)
Wrong again. One of monthly (April) numbers are way out of date.
Falcon outsold Aurion to private buyers by 3 to 2!!!!
So we know what the real pople buy hey!
lets just concentrate on the mazda 2, and mazda as a company. does anyone know if Mazda will sell the sedan version of their 2 currently on sale overseas?
P.s. isnt yaris like fairly old as compared to the 2? wouldnt it be unfair comparision?
AS long as Toyota asks good money for the Yuckis it is a fair comparison!
Don’t mind the look of the Aurion. I know,I know.LOL.
The Yuckis doesn’t have one redeeming feature. Mazda 3 is quite stylish in/out.
U know what I mean. Mazda 2,3 and 6 all better buys than the Toyota equivalents at present.
Adam – arrange and re-arrange figures as much as you want but it will never change the fact that Toyota is the biggest selling automotive company in Australia and recording sales never witnessed in Australian motoring history.
First came the ‘wow factor’ when they sold 200 000 per year and then ‘ooohs & arrrs’ when they sold 225 000 but now – gee wiz … it’s ‘wow’s, oooh’s & arrr’s’ all round as they approaching 250 000.
No amount of whinging, swining or stupid rot will ever change these very simple facts … not even remotely.
The market is the greatest judge of all and challenged by none and for the past few years, Toyota’s enormous sales undoubtedly prove it is the most popular brand across most segments of the market including mums and dads, farmers, tradies, 4×4 enthusiasts, grey nomads (travelling retirees who ‘once’ upon a long time ago probably drove a Holden or Ford), industries, mines and ofcourse – fleet.
Toyota has also recorded the biggest ever monthly sales of inexcess of 25 000 units and currently the only local manufactuer returning a profit and a hefty one at that while the best Holden and Ford can do is join the rest of the bogon brigade in la, la land and dream what once was many, many, years ago.
The fact that you have to nit pick stupid little nothings just to have a weak girly stab at Toyota proves how pathetic and desperate you and your sad, souless friends are becuase of the crushing prowess of TOYOTA.
Automotive muscle … now you know it is and it’s crushing those skinny, puny bodies of Holden and Ford.
HA, HA, HA – I LOVE IT WITH A PASSION, I REALLY DO !!
Holden and Ford have become nothing but toilet paper for Toyota and bogons like you hate it with a passion. Infact -it tears your whimpering heart out every month of the year and it show’s ‘day-in’ ‘day-out’ with your dribbling comments.
Once upon a many year ago – Holden and Ford ruled the roost and enjoyed 50% of the market to themselves but how times have drastically changed as they now have to combine thier struggling efforts just to match the might of the BIG T
Adam – the blue nurses drive Toyota’s because even they are not stupid enough to drive a Daewoo. The days may have passed when bogon’s can talking about Sunbirds but i will give Holden thier due, they haven’t forgotten about ‘yas and replaced them with Daewoo’s instead just to keep the ‘ole bogon times rock’n !!
OH WHAT A WARM AND FUZZY FEELING
That warm and fuzzy feeling again Dingo? You pee yourself again?
Anyways back on topic, Mazda make the best looking and some of the best driving four cylinders. They just aren’t generic transport with no excitement. They are well built and are exciting. I have no hesitation in recommending Mazda products. After the Ford products of course which just happen to share the same platforms.
Agree Glen.No matter how hot and sweaty Dingo may get current Mazda range offers far more bang for the buck than Toyota.
The Yuckis is such a sad vehicle.LOL.
What are the seats made of anyway and that speedo in the middle of the dash. What is that about?
How about the 1cm of rear crumple zone?
The rear passengers arse is approx a cm off the rear tyre.LOL.
TP haven’t u seen the look of resignation on the faces of the pussy whipped men driving “their” Yaris to work?
Go Toyota…
arrange and re-arrange figures!? yeah ok…
No point in repeating myself.
I agree with Glen, you might want to change the brand of pads you’re wearing!
Dingo says “Toyota has also recorded the biggest ever monthly sales of inexcess of 25 000 units and currently the only local manufactuer returning a profit..”
Something to do with bugger all investment into local engineering effort!
Take away the engineering investment into local product and Ford/Holden are in fact profitable.
If Toyota actually developed a locally engineered car instead of building an overseas developed car, then the profit/loss statements would read much differently.
^^^ yes, but if they dont start returning a profit they may go the way of Mitsubishi, given the financial troubles of the parents. Sad but possible.
Bret says “If Toyota actually developed a locally engineered car instead of building an overseas developed car, then the profit/loss statements would read much differently.”
Maybe they would sell even more cars and be even more profitable? You think?
But they cannot be doing too badly as I think the Mazda 2 and Corolla are better designed for Australia then any Holden Daewoo for Ford Euro crap.
Guys,
Thats my point, locally Toyota only manuctures an overseas design. The design costs are spread over worldwide sales, and are not borne by Toyota Aus.
Like it or not, Ford Aus and Holden will eventually be reduced to something similar, as are all markets around the world. The days of developing a specific car for just one market are rapidly dissapearing.
Pity, as I don’t know what vehicle, anywhere in the world, can provide the funtionality at the price.
SamR, Corolla and Mazda2 are city/metro cars just the same as any Euro Ford and no more or less designed for Australia. None, other than maybe Mondeo, would be very suitable vehicles outside of the city metro areas.
Have you ever tried to do an interstate trip with two adults & two kids in a Corolla? Absolutely horrendous experience.
Bret Says: “Have you ever tried to do an interstate trip with two adults & two kids in a Corolla? Absolutely horrendous experience.”
I don’t believe you. Not about the current Corolla.
The new Corolla is HUGE inside, outside it is as big as a Commodore of a couple of generations ago.
I don’t own one but I have driven it. it is quiet, reasonably powerful, roomy and from what I hear economical and reliable.
What else would you want for a car of that class?
SamR,
2003′ish model hire car, Adelaide-Melbourne, and it used more fuel than a Falcon did for the same trip 2 years earlier.
“What else would you want for a car of that class?”
Sam have alook around at others in the class, Corolla trails most and costs more.
Personally I haven’t owned a Corolla since the early nineties, and that hire car in 2003 was the last I drove for any considerable time/distance.
Congrats to mazda on the success of the mazda 2, I’ve never driven one but most reviews put it above the yaris, so good to see it paying off in sales.
However, whilst mazda’s recorded their best month (just beating last month), if you look at the sales of each model closer you notice that out of all their models only the mazda 2 increased in sales over this time last year, with all other models decreasing in sales both in relation to july 07, and year to date (exception of bt50 4×4). Sales of the cx-7, at a time where soft roader 4×4’s are booming, are down 50% from july 07 and 35% YTD.
It must be of a little concern to mazda that although they sold 52 more cars than july 07, the total share of the mazda 2 in relation to total monthly sales has gone from 9% to over 22%. Given the typically razor thin profit margins in this segment, the picture isn’t as rosy for mazda as the market share would indicate.
SamR I can think of a few. Good driving dynamics, decent quality interiors, (as in nice design and materials), decent transmissions, maybe even some engine options. The problem with the corolla is that it doesn’t excel in anything, if you read reviews and when you drive it, it is not ‘the best’ in any quantifiable measure, not the most economical, not the cheapest, not the best to drive, not the most spacious, not the best interior/exterior (although thats always subjective). The corolla is a good car all round, and obviously lots of people are happy with that but it doesn’t make it a car you can love though, unless maybe your previous cars were the hyundai getz/kia rio’s of the world.
Genie Says: “SamR I can think of a few. Good driving dynamics, decent quality interiors, (as in nice design and materials), decent transmissions, maybe even some engine options.”
I think you are being a bit unfair. Let’s discuss some of your points. (I don’t own one now I did own a twin cam version 20 years ago.)
Engine options, The Corolla is available overseas with a variety of engines from 1.4 petrol to 2.2 diesel. In Japan they sell a version with a 3.5 litre V6. The single engine option in Australia is obviously a marketing issue here and since the Corolla is the highest selling car here, a successful one.
Interiors, I found them OK, nice even at the price points
Transmissions, The 6 speed manual here is OK, the Auto is a bit backward at 4 speed (5 speed available O/S) and no DSG but given the intended market acceptable.
The car is cheap to run, maintain and is very very long lasting and runs on 91RON unlike the new Golf that needs 98RON!!!
OK it excels at nothing except of course the “cheap to run, maintain and is very very long lasting” bit. Some people don’t want a car to “love” for its ultimate dynamics just for ultimate reliability and cheap pleasant transport.
What’s wrong with that?
Nothing’s wrong with that, I said as much when I said that being good all round was fine with many people, I’m just saying a car like that is hard to love. As for pleasant transport, well thats subjective. The times I’ve had to drive my sisters 07 corolla I’ve hated, its the auto which is so slow and unresponsive you can feel yourself age between confused and often unnecessary gear changes, and the fuel economy wasn’t actually that good in real life, was getting around 9L in the city, which is only a litre less than my subaru liberty in similar traffic. I have heard the manual is not bad though, pity my sister didn’t get that one.
Will I ever love/respect a corolla. Maybe, but definitely not the current one. As for other people liking it, well its not a bad car, there are many far worse ones out there.
I’m wasn’t trying to slam the corolla, I’m was just trying to explain why some people have a problem with it. Reliability is a brain thing, the sensible part of you that realises the cost benefit of reliability. Personally I don’t wake up in the morning and go “yes! can’t wait to get in my car and sit back and enjoy the reliability”, it doesn’t excite me. I’m still slightly suspicious of self proclaimed ‘car enthusiasts’ who’s number one love in life is the reliability of their cars. Just doesn’t seem like something you can get enthusiastic about. But hey each to their own.
Sorry for the off topic post, please let this not turn into a ‘world vs toyota’ topic. Mazda 2 sales success yay, now mazda go and make a mazda 2 mps.
Well hopefully the new Fiesta can offer the same sales success to Ford which is quite likely because of its exciting new look and that its probably got the best city car chassis in the world.
number of engine optionsin oz corolla = 1. number of engine optins in mazda 3 = 3 (2ltr,2.3ltr,2.3 turbo). corolla uses same breathless engine to power its so called sporty model (sloptivo)as it does the base model which you have to rev the crap out of to get any power from it. agree with genie, bring on the 2mps.
