Mercedes-Benz E-Class Superlight details emerge
Some details of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class Superlight are starting to come into focus, with reports saying it will feature a carbon fibre construction, no B-pillars, and suicide rear doors (rear-hinged).
The E-Class Superlight is going to be a lightweight version of the large luxury sedan. This focus will allow Mercedes-Benz engineers to develop the Superlight with a very low emissions rating.
Power will come from a 112kW hydrogen fuel cell, backed up by a 37kW electric hybrid set-up. It might not sound like much but that lightweight focus is expected to assist in more than respectable acceleration.
Diesel and petrol versions are expected to follow some time after its initial launch in 2015. Both versions will likely come with plug-in hybrid technology to maintain a clear 'green car' focus.
Reports say the E-Class Superlight will tip the scales at around 1350-1400kg, around 350kg lighter than the current E-Class crop. With approximately 150kW on board, this would provide a power-to-weight ratio as low as 9kg/kW - a ratio about the same as the current E350 200kW V6 petrol variant, which is capable of 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz is set to build around 20,000 Superlights per year.
